Teaser Tuesdays/Olivia in India

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

Grab your current read.
Open to a random page.
Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!).
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Everybody in India is, more or less, somebody. It must be a very sad change to go home to England and be (comparatively) poor and shabby, and certainly obscure, to have people remark vaguely they suppose you are "something in India."

  2. Yes, that would be a very painful transition. I guess that's why so many of the English stayed in India as long as they could. Sounds like an interesting book.

  3. jlshall, very good point, and I'm sure you are right. The book is delightful - told through letters from a young girl going over to spend time with her brother.

  5. Great quote. I'd heard this before, or seen references or something like that...glad to see its origins (or one of them, at least). Nice teaser!

  6. Staci, I just love it! I'm in the process of collecting all of O. Douglas' books.

Celi.a, if you ever find another source, I'd be interested to know. I love reading about this period and this place.

  7. thanks for this one, Nan ... I do love reading books told through letters ... and I do love the word that describes them ... 'epistolary' fiction

  8. I do, too, Janice, and this one is so good - it feels like I am reading real letters. I'll be over to see your entry.

  9. looking up an old post about illustrated letters, I found a comment from Tara about the Beatrix Potter book. Have you seen or read it? I seem to remember finding it in the bookstore and it was very expensive ... oh well

  10. Janice, I have the Linda Lear biog. but haven't read it yet. I read one years ago, BP, the Artist and her World by Judy Taylor. It was wonderful and had photos and illustrations. I also own a spectacular book called Beatrix Potter A Journal. Janice, you would love it.
