Quote du jour/E.B. White

So I am lingering in Maine this winter, to fight wolves and foxes. The sun here is less strong than Florida's, but so is the spirit of development.
E.B. White, A Report in January, 1958

I wondered if there were still wolves in Maine, and found this.

  1. I just love this quote, Nan. We are going to a crowded area of Florida this February to visit family - I would trade it for a trip to Maine anyday.:) Have you ever gone to Maine?

  2. I checked out the wolf link - very interesing. I've got a thing for wolves, so I read quite a bit of the page. Hopefully they'll be successful in restoring some balance to that area.

  3. Me, too, Alison. I love that man. Yes, I've been to Maine, quite a few times, and have even driven past his house in Brooklin. Where in Florida are you going? We went to Sarasota ten years ago to visit Tom's folks, and I really liked that city. They don't live there anymore, since the man died and she remarried. They're in Palm City.

  4. I love it that you read the link, Heather. I often wonder if anyone ever does. :<) I like wolves myself and I'd love to hear that howl on a moonlit night.

  5. Hi again,

We are going to Naples. By the way, my inlaws (who live there in winter) saw Dave Barry's show in downtown Naples last year after loving the book I gave my father-in-law - DB's Christmas Sheperds book - can't quite remember the name - after your recommendation. An example of how great(and how far) things spin off your blog!

  6. Alison, that is just wonderful. I mean it - thrilling! I just loved that book. And I'm sure I mentioned that Tom's students cheer when he reads it to them in Dec.

  7. How timely! I wrote about re-introducing wolves into Northern New England on my blog yesterday. Thanks for the link--it is very interesting. We have an awful lot of wilderness up here and I think hearing a wolf how while camping in Baxter State Park would be something that I would enjoy.

  8. Beth, I haven't had a chance to check in for a few days. Amazing, amazing that you wrote about this. I'm shaking my head.

  9. I just love EB White. I think I have read all of his books. He had such a great sense of humor.

  10. I know this photo. Isn't it Jill Krementz? When I was in high school and planning to grow into a famous writer my dad bought me a book of photographs of writers by her. Maybe this was the cover? I'll have to go look for it now... Well, not now, since an arctic blast is overtaking us all and the old books are in the milkhouse, oops, I mean "library". (No milk has been in there for 30 years and husband put up shelves). Stay warm. You know I agree with you and EB about which state should win the popularity contest.

  11. Conflict is ferocious here between the anti reintroduction groups who do all they can to eradicate the bears and wolves,in other countries sheep farmers live and get along fine with both but it would seem that in France the "big bad wolf"reputaion is as strong as centuries ago...

  12. Lisa and Pamela, I love his work, too!
KSV W. You are right! Instead of using a picture from the internet, I took a photo of the cover of my copy of One Man's Meat. His writing place sounds a little like your milkhouse. Are there pictures of it on your blog? Is it heated? That's where you could go to become that famous writer! Well, you already are in some circles.
    K, sad.

  13. What a beautiful quote and photo. I love E.B.White. He wrote my all-time favorite book, Charlotte's Web. When I was in 2nd grade I memorized the first two chapters and recited them to my teacher so she would see how much I loved this book. I wanted her to let me keep her copy!! She did :)

  14. Nan - I have mentioned about adding you to my payroll, right? Re: the Milkhouse -
Whusband believed after he hung all those shelves and unpacked those books that we would one day hang out there and read, but it is not heated and is congenial only to garter snakes and mice. Maisy (the terrier) did some serious damage to one of those poor snakes this summer on one of our rare forays into the "library." I actually do have a heated cabin, there are some pictures on my blog, where I could go and write something more substantial than a blog post, but that would be a lot like work. Stay warm - the cold is pressing in around my wing chair as I type. Maybe have a popver for me.

  15. Staci, I love that little second grade you. What a precious story. I agree on the greatness of the book - I actually wrote a book report on it last year. It's here if you want to read it:

KSV W. - I love outbuildings like yours. There wasn't one left when we bought our place, but years ago, there were barns and house extensions into barns. When I read your blog, and many others, I think maybe there is no more "substantial" writing than I find on blogs. Honestly, I've read a lot that are better than many published authors. Our local papers (and the state one) have the writings of a fellow who lives on a farm and much of his writing is centered there. Sounds like a good start for you??

  16. Colleen, I do, too. Do you know the Jill Krementz book KSV was talking about? I think it's called The Writer's Desk. It offers pictures of many writers at work. Wonderful.
