Today's poem by William Arthur Ward

Another fresh new year is here...
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!
This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest...
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!
I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!

William Arthur Ward (1921-1994)

  1. Happy new year, Nan. I love the amaryllis too.

  2. What a perfect poem for today! Well, Nan, I hope 2009 is a great year for you, and may you have healthy and happy day!

  3. Thank you, Susie and Mare! I love the day by day. That's the way, isn't it?!

  4. An inspiring poem to start the New Year! A happy New Year to you!

  5. Nan, We are in agreement about our wishes for the new year. Joy and trees are about as good as a wish can get.

  6. Thank you for that poem, it is somehow even more moving in that it rhymes.
Yours is always my first-stop blog, and it never fails to nourish me. Thank you.
Apropos previous blogs, I'm gutted that I have no Gladys Taber books and have banned myself from book buying this month / year if possible.
I think you would love Thomas Merton, I always keep one of his books beside my bed.
I wish you and yours a happy and healthy 2009.

  7. Thank you, CB. I'll have to look into Merton when my self-imposed buying and borrowing ends. :<) I like rhyming poems too. That's how people used to be able to memorize them! And I thank you so much for what you said about my blog. I am very touched.

  8. I haven't read William Arthur Ward. I really like his poem. It gives us all words for throught. Thanks.

  9. Lisa, if you google him, you'll find a lot, including quotes. Quite a thoughful (as in full of thought) fellow.

  10. Lovely poem, my dear friend. A very Happy New Year to you. May it bring joy, laughter and good health to you and all those whom you love.

  11. Les, as Ellen DeGeneres says, 'the same back atcha!' Every single word.
