We put these toys out each Christmastime. The blocks and clown are from Tom's childhood. The swing belonged to our children, and someone gave us the music box. It plays the song, Toyland. Even as a child, when I "dwelled within it," the words made me cry.
Toyland, Toyland,
Little girl and boy land
While you dwell within it
You are ever happy then.
Childhood's Joy land,
Mystic, merry Toyland,
Once you pass its borders
You can never return again.
Babes in Toyland
Book and lyrics by Glen MacDonough,
Music by Victor Herbert, 1903.
Those words make me misty too! My Mom puts out old toys too. And tonight as I was driving home from work I had a night of Christmas magic: perfect music on my IPOD and beautiful Christmas lights to look at. There is always that one night of the year in December where Christmas magic starts.....
ReplyDeleteI had my husband put up some shelves in our guest room to display toys for our granddaughter to play with when she comes to visit. However, I find I may be trying to recapture that childhood joyland that I've left so long ago.
ReplyDeleteYour beautiful toys are full of precious memories.
Nan, when I read the words of this song - tears came to my eyes. I think of my two little granddaughters who are 3 and 6. This is such a magical time for them. It will go tooo fast.
ReplyDeleteWith eight grandchildren from 10 down to tiny my playroom is awash with toys all year round, but those words are very evocative.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you have those toys! And in such great condition. They'll make a whimsical addition to your decorations, I'm sure. :)
ReplyDeleteLaura, I know just what you mean! And of course, I want to know what was on the iPod!
ReplyDeleteKay, I'm looking forward to lots of pictures on your blog when she arrives. Are the toys you mention new ones, or ones your kids had?
One Woman's Journey, aren't you so lucky to have those little ones in your life! Perfect ages for Christmas!
Nicola, you still have a playroom! I love it, and what great times must occur there.
Nancy, they are whimsical, especially that windup clown who swirls those rings around. :<)
