This is a golden time for those of us in the United States who love British television. We have Netflix, Acorn, Britbox all bringing us everything from drama to mystery to garden shows. I've just finished the last episode of the first season of
Big Dreams, Small Spaces on Netflix
. It has been a lovely viewing experience particularly during some dreary weather in these waning days of winter. I've gotten new ideas, and I'm so excited to get going on them! This quote comes from the very end of the show. Of course, I've now ordered two books by Monty Don.
You don't ever finish a garden. Gardens are a not a place, they're a journey.
Monty Don
Isn't Monty lovely!
ReplyDeleteThis was my first introduction, and I will say, yes he is!
DeleteI am a big fan of Monty's and quote his dicta often when suggesting to my husband how he might go about some garden job or other. It must be said that any advice prefaced by "Monty says ..." is usually met with a "you can jolly well get Monty to do it, then", but he likes him well enough, really. Any books of his I have read have been excellent.
DeleteI love your story! Thank you for telling me! So delightful!
DeleteLove Monty Don and Gardener's World. I read his book about French gardens last year, The Road to Tholonet, and really enjoyed his take on France.
ReplyDeleteMaybe someday G's W will show up over here! I just re-read your post because now I know who you were talking about! I've ordered Nigel, and The Jewel Garden.
DeleteCath, if you should come back here, Britbox is now carrying Gardeners' World. The 2018 series. I am just delighted. I love Longmeadow, and the dogs.
DeleteThere are all sorts of youtube videos of Monty's shows. I have seen them all and watch some of them over and over, especially during winter.
ReplyDeleteI will def go see them! Thanks so much for letting me know!
DeleteHe does Gardener's World, doesn't he? Gardens are a journey, and a changing one!
ReplyDeleteYes, though I haven't seen it. And yes, I did love those words.
DeleteAt (a very quick) first glance, I thought that was Tom in a chair outside your house! This looks like a fun show to watch while I'm working on puzzles. Thanks for letting me know about it!
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny! I don't think I could look away when the show is on! So much goes on in those gardens. Such a wonderful show.
DeleteI loved Small Spaces Big Dreams and can't wait for more episodes and spring. Also Dr Findley has been good too. So true gardens are a journey, which I think is what makes gardening special. I love a journey.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Dr. F recommendation!
DeleteThank you, Nan...I'd never heard of Monty Don, but I am enjoying his shows now.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't until this Netflix show. So happy to have made his acquaintance! And happy that you are enjoying the shows.
DeleteMy favorite gardening quote is that it's the triumph of optimism over experience...But this time every year my soul fills with hope!
ReplyDeleteIt is so true, isn't it. I always, always think that this is the year I will achieve something or other. Sometimes I do, most often I don't, but I never lose hope. Gardening is indeed a journey.
DeleteI've not come across Monty Don yet, but then it is mostly mysteries we get from the UK here on Germany TV, and when I am in England, we usually don't watch garden (or other) shows. Do you know Escape to the Country? I have watched each and every episode set in Yorkshire that I could find on youtube!
ReplyDeleteI think that show might be on Netflix, too. I will check. Thanks.
DeleteIf you haven't found these yet Nan you are in for a real treat... search Mastercrafts on youtube
