As you may know, we feed the deer in the wintertime. Here is Hazel helping Pop put down their food the other day.
They eat the deer feed on the road, and also enjoy the sunflower seeds we put out for the birds.
We live on a town road and are lucky because the town crew plow during the winter. Our plowman, Brett lifts up the plow when he gets to the feeding area so he won't plow it to the side and bury the grain in the snow bank. Such a kind thing to do as he goes about his busy day.
I love that. Good on Brett, and good on you all.
ReplyDeleteWe get so much pleasure from them. Often 6 or 7, and one day 19 showed up!
DeleteWhat wonderful photos and such joy to receive from caring for the deer. Lovely to see Hazel helping! And cheers to your kind and thoughtful plowman Brett.
ReplyDeleteMary
Thanks, Mary! Yes, 'cheers' indeed!
DeleteWhat wonderful photos, the one with Hazel and her Pop and the deer in the snow! I love that your PLOWMAN lifts up the plow so as not to disturb the seed. There, I haven't even THOUGHT of a plowman, but I know my sister has them where she lives, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado!
ReplyDeleteBecause we are a town road, we don't have to pay. Plowing is very expensive if you hire someone. I remember my mother used to pay $3.50 per time. That dates me, doesn't it?!!
DeleteYour plowman is special.
ReplyDeleteYes, he is.
DeleteA man who goes about his job with his brain switched on and consideration for others! We definitely need more like Brett. By the way I'd spell it plough and ploughman - I know ploughman's lunch from the pub :-)
ReplyDeleteIt must be so utterly good for Hazel to grow up the way she does, surrounded by people who love her, people who love nature and animals and instill the same love in her.
I love what you wrote. Thank you. I really mean to post more about Hazel and Campbell and Indy so my dear blogging friends can get to know them a bit.
DeleteHow lovely - both you and the ploughman / plowman! Amazing photos. I haven't seen a deer for ages, although I'm going to be standing in a park that has them today (but herding runners, not deer!).
ReplyDeleteWe live in the country surrounded by woods. We have signs of moose but haven't seen any this year so far. Have heard coyotes but not close. Have fun doing your 'herding!'
DeleteAh! how far a little of the milk of human kindness can go, Nan x
ReplyDeleteIt really is lovely of him.
DeletePerfect in oh-so-many ways!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Penny.
DeleteLovely pictures and a very nice story of kindness, Nan. I love to see your pictures of snow. It has been colder here than usual, but of course nothing compared to where you live.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tracy. It is really quite cold. There's a strong March wind right now.
DeleteWhat wonderful memories this little girl is going to have of spending time with the two of you!
ReplyDeleteWe used to have our road plowed when we lived on an acreage in Lincoln. The man who drove the plow was so nice and I especially remember how wonderful he was to plow our road the day before our huge moving truck arrived, right after a huge snowstorm. There was no way the van could have made it near our house, but after making a call to the county roads department, they sent our guy out. He did it with a cheerful smile and a "good luck in Texas" comment. He obviously enjoyed his job.
Such a nice story!
DeleteIf you haven't read it already, I know you would love The Gift of the Deer by Helen Hoover. She also wrote A Place in the Woods, The Long-Shadowed Forest and The Years of the Forest. I enjoy your blog although I seldom comment, but this time, I knew I had to! Judy from Pennsylvania
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping in and leaving me a note, and thanks for the recommendations!
DeleteI love the picture of Hazel and her (I assume?) grandfather. If you ever come across it, there is a picture book called Stranger in the Woods by Sams that I think she would like.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's Tom. She was born on his birthday! Thank you stopping by and leaving a note, and thanks for the recommendation.
DeleteWhat a lovely story -- Hazel Nina and her Pop are a great team (along with the photographer), It's always warms my heart that you feed the deer in Winter and I love learning that the snowplow operator takes time to care as well. It's so great when people do their job beautifully with extra added care!
ReplyDeleteIt really is very wonderful, Sallie! We were so pleased to see him do it.
