Quote du jour/Monty Don

My dear English friend Carole sent me the address of an interview with Monty Don. You may find it here. I found it so interesting. He is very open and honest about the joys and the difficulties in his life. I jotted these words down.

One of my theories about gardening well is that you've got to give yourself to it. You've really got to pay attention and that doesn't have to be too intense - you've just got to be there. That great motto in life is to pay attention, be there. If you're planting something, do it with all your energy and mind. If you want to do anything, you've really got to do it properly.

  1. Thank you for the link - it was a wonderful interview with an amazing person. His music choices were ones I love. A treat, Nan. Such a complex human being - as are we all.

  2. I'm so glad you were able to hear it Nan, I thought you would enjoy it. He's a wise man despite, or maybe because of, his depressions and other illnesses.

  3. I am copying Monty Don's theory of gardening into my Commonplace Book, Nan, and then heading over to hear his interview. It has been pleasant meeting him through your quote du jour posts. This theory to just be there is a theme that runs through my life, whether to "be there" for our daughters' wedding and with grandchildren, or the "be there" through my sister's illness and passing, being in the moment and place is vital to me, whether in joy or in sorrow. Thanks for the introduction.

  4. I try to do things properly, whatever I do, too; half-hearted (or, like my late husband would have said, half-arsed!) is not my way.
Monty Don seems to have his heart and mind in the right place. As you say, nothing pretentious there.

  5. I am a big Monty Don fan. I just finished reading his book NIGEL My family and other dogs. I know you would appreciate it. He writes as well as he speaks. You might need a tissue. He talks about his dogs passing as well as their lives. A good read especially if you have dogs, or ever had a dog, or just love dogs.
