Celebrating an anniversary with Alabama Shakes

On this, the fifth anniversary of my first blog posting I want to thank every single person who has ever read my letters and taken a minute to write back. You have made my life richer, deeper, and happier. Here is a little thank you present. Just this morning I learned about this band from my Vermont pal, and I cannot thank her enough! I LOVE Alabama Shakes. I bought their four-song EP at the website, and it is fantastic.

  8. Hi Nan:
Congratulations on five years. Although I don't comment much, I read your every posting. I hope your writings will continue for many more years. Your blog is indeed a special place for me.

  9. Does everybody know the origin of the name "Alabama Shakes"? I'm from AL so I can tell you--it's the nickname the actors have for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery--a professional institution of high quality. Happy anniversary, Nan. I have a novel with its last (I hope) editor, and I'll keep you up to date on its progress. In the meantime, I've written about Thanksgiving on my blog and about a visit to Zuccotti Square. www.myselfinhoboken.blogspot.com

  12. Do you suppose that's where they got the name, Mary Lois? Somehow I think not, but maybe. I did stop by today and read your nice piece on gratitude. I'm happy about the book progress!

    Elaine, exactly!

Cath, such nice words. Thank you so much.

  13. Love the music!

Thank YOU Nan for the past 5 years.

Are you a member of Friends of Gladys Taber by the by?

I have a few framed prints of Larsson. This one I can not find. Darn.

Speaking of prints. You have one by a woman artist.(I think). Of a porch/house winter scene. On one of your photos it was hanging above a sofa. Ring a bell?

  18. Dear Nan,
All I could think of when I was reading this was to think how thankful I am to be able to read your blog. Do you remember when you made the announcement that you wouldn't do your blog anymore? Strange how lost that made me feel, but THEN, you said that you would, and it made me so happy!
Happy 5th to you! And hey, I just had my 50th post, yay for me! :-)
    Love,
    Kay

  19. Awww, Kay made me cry, too. I can't imagine not visiting your blog every morning. I remember those early days when you asked for my advice and help. Now you're a pro with so many new friends who share your joys in life. Thank you for introducing me to so many wonderful recipes, books, poems, music, movies and inspiring home life. I love you like a sister.

  22. Nan, happy blogoversary! I, like the others who've commented, am glad "I found you!" (Great song/band too...) Today I am exactly one month from my five year blogging anniversary too! Isn't it funny how we seem to go along some parallel lines? While I don't comment all that often, I keep up with you regularly and am always happy to have stopped by (even when you do make me quite hungry with those delightful photos of your yummy-looking baked goods that I never do get around to making.) Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

  24. Wow! Five years! I think of you as the modern day Gladys Taber when you post about your life, and I also admire your reviews. I've chosen several books for my list because I trust your reviews.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Nan.

  26. Tracey, yes I am a member!! And I am just amazed that you remember that painting! It called Moon Shadows by Carol Collette. Her homepage is here:
    http://carolcollette.com/

    and the painting is here:

And I DID NOT pay that price. :<) I still can't believe you remembered the painting from one of my pictures.

    Penny, lovely words. Thank you.

    I'll try, Librarian.

    Thank you, Betsy.

Lisa, thank you, and I so love the band.

  27. Thank YOU, Nan, for all your stories and photographs, recipes and book reviews and for hanging in there when you felt like taking a break (we wouldn't let you!). I really enjoy stopping by and watching the seasons change up in New England.

  28. And I always so appreciate your kind notes, Deirdre. Did I tell you that I grew up next door to a Deirdre?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Really, Nan? Mine is not a name you hear too often in the States, is it? By the way, I love the seasons of New England - I went to college there many years ago - and I am able to reminisce about the changing scenery whenever you share your views from your window! Continue to enjoy your blog anniversary!

  30. carolcollette. Got it. I'll go and visit her web-site right now. And no--I won't spend THAT much either. A girl can always dream...sigh.

Discovering something that clicks--that I always remember.

FOGT--a lovely periodical. So much work goes into it.

    Enjoy your thanksgiving.

  31. Thanks for the shout out Nan. Happy Thanksgiving.

  32. I just Googled Alabama Shakes to see which came first, the Festival or the band. Turns out the band was originally called The Shakes and they were of course from Alabama. I can't help but think they caught wind of the nickname for the Ala. Shakespeare Festival (which has been running since the 1980s) and made it their own. It's a good name either way.

  33. Deirdre, in addition to the girl next door, there was a girl who came to our school in maybe 7th grade whose name was also Deirdre. Hers was pronounced Deer-dree, whereas the girl I grew up with pronounced hers Deer or Dare-dra. Where did you go to school? I was at Boston University.

Thanks, Tracey, and same to you.

    KSV, same to you.

Mary Lois, you're right - it's a fun name no matter the origin.

  34. Thank you Nan for continuing your wonderful blog...I am another appreciative reader and have been inspired many times by you! I just watched the movie you recently recommended and really enjoyed the lessons in it.
I also remember being on a computer in The Netherlands when I read your post about concluding...am ever so glad that you have continued.
    Blessings to you and yours!
    grateful in Ontario,
    Joanne
