Death of our dog Sadie

Mary Oliver says in her book Dog Songs
And it is exceedingly short, his galloping life. Dogs die so soon. I have my stories of that grief, no doubt many of you do also. It is almost a failure of will, a failure of love, to let them grow old - or so it feels. We would do anything to keep them with us, and to keep them young. The one gift we cannot give.
Our beloved Sadie was put down yesterday afternoon after months of up and down health problems. During the up times we kept hoping she could come back, and during the downs we felt such despair. Yesterday we took her out walking just a little bit.

My poor old girl. How I miss her.

  4. Oh Nan, my heart aches with you! There's nothing quite like the love of a dog. After losing the last of our 3 labs I just can't do it again so we've decided no more dogs. For now.

  6. I am so sorry for your loss, I know how you feel. My old boy passed 22 months ago; I had him put down because of his suffering due to old age and poor health. Even when you know it's the correct, kind, loving choice - it is so difficult and sad. My heart goes out to you and your family.

  9. I am so sorry, I know how it makes your heart ache. I lost both my dogs and cat last year and it's so empty without them. I hope you can look back on happy times which I'm sure they are many - I'm crying with you.

  10. How sad. I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been there, several times and I know you will never forget. As we get older, it seems harder, doesn't it. We long to keep our friends forever and it just can't be. That's a beautiful picture, one to treasure.

  19. Nan, dear, I'm so sorry. It hurts so much, for such a long long time.

It's the last love you show them, knowing when it's time to agree to ending their pain and looking them in the eyes as they go.

    Love,
    Dewena

  28. Nan,

Our 11 year old dobie and I2 year old shepherd died within a year of each other. Cancer and hip dysplasia. The house was so empty. The places they curled up in....the chairs they owned......their favorite digging holes....the fence they chewed down. Just so many spaces they filled. Empty. (Plus the family memories.....Maura and Max grew up with them. Or perhaps Sophie and Luke grew up with the children). We ended up with 6 corgis. And 2 months ago-----a shepherd pup. Such a handsome boy. Such crazy corgis.

It's most definitely not empty around here anymore. What on earth were we thinking?! :)

  29. Dear Nan,
I am very sorry for your loss. What a sweet dog! I can tell by your photos of her and the way you talk about her. Sweet Sadie. Do you remember the song by Chas & Dave? "I Miss You Girl"? I listened to that when I lost my cat, its how I felt.

  32. I'm very sad to hear this, Nan. So sorry for your loss. Dogs always wind up breaking our hearts in the end. But it's part of the bargain we make when we allow them into our lives. And oh by the way, what would our lives be if we didn't? Like Mary Oliver says in your quote, 'I have my stories of that grief...' Yeah, I know how you feel. But Sadie would bless you if she could.
