We have a houseful of spiders and daddy-long-legs in the late summer, and I thought this was the latter until I took a closer look. First dragonfly we've ever seen inside. Tom brought it out and it flew away. It doesn't look much like the other one, but I'm quite sure it is a dragonfly. The second picture is blurry but I wanted a closeup.
We get things that look like that as the fall comes on, but we call them crane flies.
ReplyDeleteThat's it! Thank you! They are craneflies. I figured anything that looked like that was a kind of dragonfly, but I did a picture search for cranefly and this is it! Thanks a million.
DeleteI've never seen one like this! But I must admit I am not keen on having spiders and other visitors with 8 or 6 legs in my flat. There is plenty of room for them outside :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm not "keen" either! But in a drafty old farmhouse, in the middle of fields and woods, there are all sorts of critters who come inside.
DeleteOh! what a beauiful thing - so lucky you got to see it!
ReplyDeleteand PS! here's a link that will tell you all about the life cycle. It's from a British site, but I don't think that makes any difference, and it's fascinating. https://british-dragonflies.org.uk/odonata/life-cycle-and-biology/
ReplyDeleteThank you! I've saved it on the desktop so Tom and I can read it later!
DeleteThat is either a very stout type of crane fly or a very flimsy dragonfly. I have never seen one quite like this before. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a crane from the pictures I found.
DeleteYour lovely insects (bugs) are prettier than mine. Just killed a giant scorpion the other day. And there are the spiders, which I don't mind so much. Hate mosquitoes.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, we don't have poisonous spiders. And happily, rarely any mosquitos. Though you know we do have those miserable ticks! Though they are all gone by about the fourth of July so that's good. Only the wet spring is ruined in terms of walking in the woods.
DeleteIt's really beautiful in the zoomed in shot, isn't it?
