Quote du jour/May Sarton

A house that does not have one worn, comfy chair in it is soulless.
May Sarton

If this is true, and I feel it is, then my house is as soulful as a house can be! I have six chairs - four in the living room, and two in the kitchen by the wood stove. Each one of them is worn, and exceedingly comfy.

And to Raya, the most comfortable of all is a big box filled with newspaper.

  1. Our entire house could be considered worn. ha... It has a lot of soul.

  3. We have a comfortable old chair in each house (and they're very very small houses) so I hope that counts ;>)... I always think that a house without some books and papers scattered around is soulless! (And I think that because they are everywhere in ours.) I love your header shot!!!

    1. I agree. Too much order is so unwelcoming to me.

  4. I love love love your chairs! I have always been drawn to chairs and have a dream of having a bunch of them scattered throughout my house in lieu of couches....

    1. SO nice to hear from you! I actually wrote a post about my 'couch less' living room:
http://lettersfromahillfarm.blogspot.com/2009/07/houseworktale-of-couchless-living-room.html The room looks different now and I'm very happy with it. We actually didn't keep the couch at taking it out of the living room. We put it at the end of our road with a free sign and it was snapped up by our neighbor!

  7. I could easily curl up in any one of them, Nan (well, maybe not the box). Comfy, indeed.
Your dresser/buffet/side chest is quite similar to my mother-in-law's and brings warm memories to me.

    1. I moved the box into the study away from the warm stove, and Raya is still using it. :<) The dresser has a story. The woman who cuts my hair had her studio in her grandmother's house for years. The woman died and the house was sold and the furniture distributed among the family. All except this chest. No one wanted it, and I got it! It is the piece that brings together out little sitting area. We love it.

    1. Thank you! It is unusual to not have a couch, but I really like it this way. We never had the right wall for a couch.
