The other evening I watched the wonderful The Job of Songs on Prime - Irish musicians in Doolin. One of them is the woman singing this, Katie Theasby. I've listened to it a half dozen times, and I cry every time. Wonderful song. She refers to Grapefruit Moon, the Tom Waits song, and Come On Eileen, by Dexy's Midnight Runners.
I can see why it brings you to tears!
ReplyDeleteYes.
DeleteWhat a lovely song. Thank you, Nan.
ReplyDeleteThanks for listening. It is beautiful.
DeleteSuch a talent. I also came across an interview with her on the BBC which revealed that she played Glastonbury at the age of 14, playing whistle with Ron Kavana's band. She was also in the comedy series Father Ted. But it's in singing simple, straightforward songs that she excels. Try this:

Thank you for the information, and the link. I've never seen Father Ted, but I am kind of amazed she was in it. Shall to to the link right now.
DeleteI just went. I had watched this a few times before. This must be the only song in the world that uses the word "lent". Or even in literature - I don't think I've ever heard it, but it is just perfect in this song.
DeleteThat was wonderful, thank you for sharing with us.
ReplyDeleteI am happy you liked it.
DeleteShe is the niece of Neil Theasby, fellow blogger (by the name of Yorkshire Pudding) and friend of mine. Her Dad was Neil‘s brother, and he wrote about the song on his blog some time ago. I remember how it affected me deeply, since my own Dad had died not all that long ago.
ReplyDeleteOh, my gosh!! I am amazed. I think I have popped into his blog, but not for a while. I will go. Thank you for coming by, and for this information.
