The Kinks - "Waterloo Sunset"

The Kinks page I follow on Instagram says that today is the 55th anniversary of the achingly lovely "Waterloo Sunset". In the video, they are performing on a German TV show in June of 1967. The music critic Robert Christgau once said that it is "the most beautiful song in the English language"!

  1. Oh, Nan. I am also a devotee. I love the Kinks and I had a friend called Lola L.O.L.A and every time I hear that song I melt. Can I suggest that you listen to the Desert Island Discs episode with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin? It's funny, sad and surprising (who knew he would select a song by Mario Lanza?) and above all life enhancing.

    1. I have never heard that show, though I've heard of it. I will see if I can watch online. Thanks. When we were kids we saw the Kinks in Boston and a woman in line had made a birthday cake for Ray! We saw him a couple times when he was touring around by himself in the 90s. It was so fun for our kids. We quite often have a "Ray for the day" in our family where someone finds his perfect words for what is going on in our lives.

  2. OMG. Every time I hear this song I feel myself walking over Waterloo Bridge and I can actually smell the dirty old London of those days. It's achingly nostalgic yet perennially wonderful. It might be *the* sixties song for me.

    1. Oh, I just knew you would write! It is just the tenderest song, and I love it so much. Such an old soul Ray was when still essentially a kid. Speaking of "dirty old London", I think there is an instagram account called that. I follow one called "dirty old Boston" and it is so interesting and sad to see how the past is really gone. I think so many cities are all gentrified and too expensive for regular people. Breaks my heart.

  3. This was certainly in my time period but I have no recollection of it. But then I don't think I was ever as cool as you, Nan. I'm still not! I did listen to the whole thing though. Hmm.
