Merrily down the stream

When the virus came along, our local movie theatre began to offer streaming movies. Part of the cost of the film went to the theatre.

And oh, what wonders we've seen.

Once Were Brothers - about the band called, well, The Band. Did any of you buy Music From Big Pink? The film was just great. It was narrated by Robbie Robertson with lots of old film and footage. Excellent even if you weren't into the music then.

The Booksellers - about the antiquarian book biz in New York City. Absolutely fascinating. These are passionate folks.

Up From the Streets - about New Orleans music. Perfectly wonderful.

Sometimes Always Never - I think Bill Nighy may just be my favorite actor ever. This is a quiet, moving film that we loved.

Never Too Late - wonderful film about older men and a woman having "happy endings". One of my other favorite actors is in it - Dennis Waterman from The Sweeney, On The Up, New Tricks. He was born the day before I was.

Next up is Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things. So looking forward to this.

  1. Great choices, all. I've been streaming similar movies from the Kanopy service offered by my local library. We are limited to four choices per month, but much to my delight, I have found that the "Great Courses" on offer, some of them having 24-36 episodes each, only count as one choice for the month. They can even be continued into the following month with counting as a new choice.

By the way, I think you have the best header pictures I've seen anywhere. Love 'em.

    1. I am way impressed about the Great Courses!
And my chickens thank you, though they haven't been in that many blog header pics. They move too fast.

  4. Love the header photo!
I don't know any of the films, but I can imagine some of them being very much what I like watching. Wasn't New Tricks a great series? Your mention of it made me think I should go and see whether I can find the entire series to re-watch, I am sure I have missed many episodes while it was on regular TV here, as it was an early afternoon thing and I only discovered it during the time I was not working after my eye operation.

    1. I am actually watching it again just now on DVD. I do that every few years.

  5. Echoing the day lily comment from you..... that little cobbled area surround by the lilies is such a pretty spot. I think it must be a good year in the northern hemisphere for day lilies..... mine have gone absolutely mad and extended their flowering period for a good three weeks longer than usual and still buds are forming! We had a wet winter and a hot, dry spring so maybe that is just the conditions they like most.

"The Booksellers"? Just watched that this week on Amazon Prime and loved every minute of it.

My elderly sister took the decision to march herself off to a care home recently, so I am left with the job of emptying her house and sorting stuff. It's a job I never mind doing, but this one is a bit close to home. She had two falls back in June, and then pneumonia in July, so there was a lot of stress, which seems to have taken itself out on my back - so of to chiropractor this morning!

    1. Such a difficult time. I'm so sorry and am thinking of you. What a job to empty someone else's house. I'd bet there are family things there that mean something to you.
As for daylilies, it is funny because the British gardening shows rarely show any. I began to think they just weren't grown there, either because of climate or lack of interest. So happy to hear about yours!!

  7. I love that header picture! My favorite hen, Cher, lived a long life and was just like them although I've forgotten the name--a Barred something or other?

I am so embarrassed to admit that I don't know what "streaming" is or how to do it. But I do think Bill Nighy is one of the best actors ever! I've written down the movie name but think I probably saw it. Wrote down two others also. I should keep a list of what I watch but always forget to.

    1. Mine are Dominiques - what I've read is America's first breed of chickens! They are hardy, easy keepers, cheerful, and great egg layers. I think the other breeds that look like them are all descendants of the original Dominiques. I have read books where in the olden days they were referred to as "Dominikers"!
Do NOT be embarrassed. There is so, so much new technology that it is impossible to keep up!!

    1. Yes, they do! It's funny - usually we have a crew out strolling at the same time, but this summer just two or three have taken evening walks.
