Sister Monica Joan:
"When I was a novice, I found Lent the hardest season. Not for the hardship of self-sacrifice - that I willingly embraced - but for the absence of nature's beauty in the chapel. I always found it an invaluable aid to spiritual labour. But then I encountered a passage that gave great illumination. It is not the penance that we choose which is pleasing to God... it is the setting aside of ego and the submission to His will."
"The setting aside of ego"...that is not a very popular idea these days, is it? It is "ME, ME, ME!"
ReplyDeleteThank you Kay for your words. So very true.
DeleteDear Sister Monica Joan. She is so wise and I love that the show honors her for that. (I love the show full-stop -- but that's one of the top reasons.) I read where the show's writer Heidi Thomas recently received the OBE. She deserves it. (So does whoever cast the show because we really do believe her words when those women deliver them!)
