February books

I began three new mystery series this month!

10. A Shot in the Dark - book 1 in the Mydworth mysteries
by Matthew Costello (with Neil Richards)
mystery 2019
Kindle
finished 2/6/21

This is a new series set in the late 1920s. I completely enjoyed this story of an aristocratic Englishman, Sir Harry Mortimer and his Bronx-born wife, Kat. They have both been active in government service, and are now home in England. Happily for them, there are enough murders to keep them from getting bored. I like the main characters and I liked this story. I will read more and more of this series.

11. A Pint of Murder - book 1 in the Madoc and Janet Rhys series
by Alisa Craig
mystery 1980
Kindle
finished 2/20/21

This was my first book by Charlotte MacLeod writing as Alisa Craig. It was a very sweet kind of book (if you don't mind a few murders!)in which the reader is introduced to Madoc Rhys, a royal Canadian mountie, and Janet Wadman. I enjoyed it and plan to read the other four books in the series. I've read a very few of MacLeod's books; one in the Peter Shandy series and one in the Kelling/Bittersohn series. I do like her, and am happy to be back in her company.

12. The Old Woman Who Named Things
by Cynthia Rylant
illustrated by Kathryn Brown
children's picture book 1996
print
finished 2/22/21

I recently bought this book. I wrote about a library copy here on the blog. It was written 20 days before Margaret was rushed to the hospital. I wasn't such an old lady then as I feel like now. Hoping when the virus lessens, I will kind of find myself again.

If you go back to read it, and read the comments, you'll see the first one was from Cait O'Connor. Her blog is still up, and the last entry is just so sad. I didn't leave a note, and I'm sorry about that.

13. A Little Night Murder - book 2 in the Mydworth mysteries
by Matthew Costello (with Neil Richards)
mystery 2019
Kindle
finished 2/24/21

I liked this one just as much as the first!

14. Murder at Melrose Court - book 1 in the Heathcliff Lennox series
by Karen Baugh Menuhin
mystery 2018
Kindle

finished 2/27/21

I so enjoyed this book that I've since read the second, and am now on the third. If the author's name sounds familiar, her husband is the son of the late Yehudi Menuhin. She has a website here, and you can sign up for her reader's club which of course I did. In the first email, there is a link to get a short story about the main character, Heathcliff Lennox. He hates his first name. He fought in the First World War, and this is another series set in the 1920s. He has a dog, and soon has a cat as well both of whom he loves. He is quite eccentric, a loner, but pleasant enough to other people. He is a different character than I've read before.

This month I don't have a favorite. I completely enjoyed every book. And I am still reading The Splendid and The Vile. Great, great book. We just gave a copy to a friend for his birthday.

  1. Isn't that the best - not to have a favourite because you completely enjoyed each and every one!
I am slowly making a dent into Barack Obama's Promised Land. Hardly surprising, a very good read on so many levels.

    1. Yes!!
There's something really nice about reading a big book, and slowly savoring it over the weeks and months.

  2. The Shot in the Dark Book is a free download on Amazon if anyone is interested. I was glad to get that one.

  3. I love your header pic of the grandkids, Nan!

How lovely to find a couple of new series to get your teeth into. I will look into the Mydworth series as I've not heard of that. I seem to be hooked on Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books, as I said, so nice to find new series that you love.

    1. Oh, Cath, so do I!
It really is wonderful. And I am one of those who reads right through a series. I find it total reading fun.

  4. Can't ask for much more than enjoying everything you've read! I love how you gravitate toward these older mysteries - many of which I have never heard of. Are they old books you've had or how did you select them - I'm intrigued.

    1. Actually the three are new, but set in older times. Many times I hear about books from bloggers, and sometimes Mr and Mrs Amazon will suggest something and most of the time they are right!

  5. You know you're on a roll when you read this many books and enjoy every single one of them. That's what I call a good reading month. I'm not familiar with any of the books (or, sadly, even the authors), but I got a kick out of your description of one of them being a "very sweet kind of book" if you disregard the murders.

Here's hoping that March works out as well for you as February did.

    1. Most always my reading months are great because I drop anything I don't like!
I suppose what I wrote about "sweet" is the description of many cozy mysteries!

  6. Sounds like a great set of books, always good when you can roll through a load of good ones. I also discard what I'm not enjoying, a powerful thing to be able to do.

    1. It is powerful! But I can't imagine carrying on with a book that doesn't make me happy.

  7. Thank you for the new series recommendations. I just finished the last available book in the Wexford series by Ruth Rendell. Three of them are neither at the Library nor on Amazon and I hate that. I kind of like to binge when I find a mystery series I enjoy. (Although I do read other books in between.). .... speaking of binging, but on streaming, thank you for the reminder of New Tricks... we are both loving this old series and I have barely watched anything else since we started it. (Bill’s the night owl of our house so he watches more than I do.).

    1. I am just the same! And so happy about New Tricks. I've decided I have to watch it pretty much every year!

  8. It is such a good show but we just got to the season where everybody except Gerry is new and I’m not quite happy about that yet. Did you watch Good Karma Hospital ever? (There is a connection in case you haven’t.).
