As Time Goes By

I saw on instagram that the first episode of As Time Goes By premiered on January 12, 1992. 30 years!! I can hardly believe it. My children turned 10 and 7 that year.

I decided I would start watching it all over again beginning tonight. I own the boxed set, and have watched many times. I have a note that the last time was 2017.

Long time readers will remember Mrs Bale making many appearances, and I am thinking she might again this year. She has her own letter topic on the sidebar, with 80 entries!

  1. Of course I remember Mrs Bale and would welcome her return to your blog!
I don't believe I have ever seen one single episode of As Time Goes By. Maybe I should investigate.

  2. This is one of my favorite shows of all time. My Mom and I have watched the entire series several times. We started watching it on PBS in the early 2000s and got hooked.

    1. I love that you watched with your mother.
Thanks for coming by and leaving me a note. I will be over to your blog.

  3. Thirty years? Wow, I would not have guessed it was that long ago. We're currently enjoying Michael Gambon's version of Maigret from 1992 so that also is thirty years old. What a pity few modern programmes are as good as these old ones.

    1. I saw that version years ago. I did like the new version, too.
A new show/version of an old show which we just love is All Creatures Great and Small. I especially like the actors and Mrs Hall's bigger role.

    2. I'm very smitten with the new All Creatures Great and Small, such a wonderful cast and especially Mrs. Hall. It's on our Channel 5 which is a minor commercial channel but these days is the one we watch the most as it has all the wonderful gentle travel docs. we love. Some people for you to look out for who have travelled about the UK: Susan Calman, Kate Humble, Pam Ayres, George Clarke, Michael Portillo, Alexander Armstrong (he went to Iceland, in fact we've been inundated with various people going there), and Rick Stein, the chef, who's been touring Cornwall for the BBC and is on his second series. You would enjoy the travels of any of these, Nan.

  4. We also watched it all those years ago and now I still see it on PBS Saturday nights. I was always amused at how Lionel usually wore a tie even as he enjoyed his custard tarts at home. Love Mrs.Bale!

    1. That was my father. I hardly ever saw him without a tie.
Do you make custard tarts? Buy them? I have saved recipes online for years but haven't made them! It is hard for me to imagine how there can be a mix. I make "just" custard. https://lettersfromahillfarm.blogspot.com/2007/09/sunday-supper-custard-and-coffeecake.html

  5. I can hardly believe it! 30 years?! We had just moved to Nebraska. Wow. I've watched the entire series and started to watch it again a few years ago, but got sidetracked. Maybe now would be a good time. I've been listening to Major Pettigrew's Last Stand (second time - a reread for book club) and I keep envisioning Lyle as the Major. I'll look forward seeing Mrs. Bale here again, Nan!

    1. It never ages. It is just the best show. As I remember, your mother loves it, too?

  7. I'm re-watching it on BritBox . Some episodes I pretty much know all the dialogue "by heart" but a few others I have forgotten (probably ones I fell asleep watching all those years ago!). Mrs Bales is always more than welcome to come visit. I follow a blog by a most interesting lady who lives in London; the other day her post said she likes to listen to the Shipping News, that she finds it relaxing. (I wonder if she is a reincarnation of Mrs B? )

    1. I love it that people really do listen, who don't really need to. I'll bet it is soothing.

  8. We watched this for the first time a few months back and were delighted. A perfect show brought to us by our subscription to BritBox.
