Grammy and Nana award winner! The Adults Are Talking - The Strokes LIVE NYE

This year I did something I hadn't done since I was a kid. I bought an album called The New Abnormal by The Strokes based on my love of one song, "The Adults Are Talking"! Every time it was on the radio, I stopped in my tracks, and thought that I just had to own it. Happily, I love every single song on the record. But this one, oh, is a perfect, perfect song to me. I love every note. The album has not left the turntable for weeks. When I heard it had won the Grammy award for Best Rock Album, I was so happy. The lyrics are a bit hard to understand, but honestly, I don't even care that much. It is that music and voice and instruments that I am wild about.

  1. We definitely have different tastes in music. Sorry tried to listen but couldn't. Currently reading Moonflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz. Have you read anything by him?

    1. Ha ha! No sorries. I listen to a lot of different kinds.
Yes, to AH. Have read the first one in the series, Magpie Murders.

  3. Isn't it wonderful to make such a discovery, finding a song you love so much you buy the album, and then to find you enjoy the entire album!
I did not play the entire video, as I am basically not fond of live music on tape with all the background noises from the crowds and so on. But I am happy for you! :-)

    1. I didn't like the noise at the beginning, but the video for it was robots or something playing baseball. haha

  4. I have to second Marcia about the music, but am in agreement about your reading material. And, have to confess - I now enjoy Midsomer Murders - I like the newer cast so much more.

    1. Oh boy so do I! I like John's relationship with his wife much better. The first Barnaby was a little too flirty for my liking! Though I did so like it when the daughter was in the show. There are two new shows on Acorn, but you probably know that.

  5. I've never heard of them but I agree that it is fun to be trendy sometimes - on these occasions I enjoy being in the know and casually dropping the information to whichever nephew or niece I think will be impressed!

I am leading a group read of They Loved to Laugh by Kathryn Worth, and I think this is a book you would enjoy with your granddaughter in a few years. It is a heartwarming story about an orphan who goes to live on a farm in NC and learns (painfully) the skills necessary for this life. Keep your eyes open for a copy.

    1. I was shocked they won the Grammy because they were a new-to-me band. Don't know how I missed them years ago.
      Thanks for the book recommendation!

  6. Your enthusiasm about the song and the band made me smile, Nan. It reminds me of a whole different era when bands depended on radio-plays to sell records and make a name for themselves, and when we couldn't wait to get our hands on a physical copy of any new music that we loved. I miss those days.

You mentioned a "turntable." Did you mean that literally? If so, that's even better. I still occasionally play my collection of vintage LPs from back in the day. I've given a few of them to my grandson who's become quite the Beatles fanatic, but I still have several hundred others that bring back memories of those days.

    1. Yes!! And I still buy a lot of new records! I read that records outsold CDs in 2020 for the first time since 1985. Of course, most people still buy music they can't touch or see. And I do, too, only I don't subscribe to any services. I keep them in iTunes. And I have two radio stations I listen to - both independent stations. https://pointfm.com/ and https://www.nococommunityradio.org/. Thank you for asking, and being interested. And I love that boy for loving the Beatles!

  7. Oh my dear Nan, I am from such an earlier time than you! Elvis was my heart throb, even the Beatles didn't start up until I was married. But we are kindred spirits in so many other ways. As usual on April 1, I started reading Enchanted April and now have gone on to cycle through 4 or 5 other of Elizabeth von Armin's books. That's my night reading and with breakfast I'm reading the most fascination memoir called Old Men Forget by Duff Cooper, Viscount Norwich, time period covering his life in Parliament and both World Wars. I think for the first time I'm beginning to understand a little of the working of the British government, at least how it was back in those days. So different from ours here and possibly much more efficient?

I'll let you get back to your music now!

    1. Elvis was mine, too! And Fabian, and Bobby Rydell, and Frankie Avalon, and Bobby Dee. I have lived and breathed music for all my years.
There's a book you might like - Swiss Summer. Each chapter is a flower or plant. https://www.deanstreetpress.co.uk/pages/book_page/388
And I know I'd love the DC book.

  8. Oh, Nan now you are talking. My first LP, Wild One,(sigh) was by Bobby Rydell. I also loved Brenda Lee, Chubby Checker and the Everly Brothers just to add to your list (agree with every one on it). I meant to comment on your post on Family at War. I loved that series - very tempted by the box set...another series at that time was The Forsyte saga with Susan Hampshire, Eric Portman etc.
    Do you remember that?

    1. It is SO worth it to buy the DVDs of A Family At War if you loved the show. I'm already thinking about when I'll watch again. Excellent. And yes, I did watch The Forsyte Saga. It was also such a wonderful series. Last year I read the books for the first time, and thought they were so good.
