Today's picture/Chickens at the bird feeders
This warm weather is bringing the chickens outdoors again, and they were delighted to find that we are feeding the birds again! They often eat right alongside the ground feeders - mourning doves, blue jays, sparrows, and crows.
I had to take the photo through the door window. It is on a bit of a zoom. Not very clear, but you get the idea. There are a few more chickens who haven't stopped by the new feeding station yet, but I expect they will in time.

Love those free-range chicks -- good for you for providing them some easy pickings!
ReplyDeleteThere is a fence along the barn with a space just the right size for them to get through. They don't come out every day in the warmer weather, but quite often. They are very 'neighborly' hens.

ReplyDeleteIt is a mixture of regular black oil sunflower seeds, and a locally put together mix of all kinds of things, including peanuts!

DeleteThis makes me miss ours. They used to eat with the birds too. Are yours Plymouth barred rocks? I loved their eggs.

Dominiques. More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominique_chicken The Plymouths were developed from them. It is a lovely breed. Hearty, long-lived, great eggs. And here, at Windy Poplars, they live till they die. We get new ones every three years, and they join however many are still around. Do you plan to have chickens again in your new place? Thanks for noticing the Irish blessing. I love it, too.
DeleteNo, Nan, we won't be getting any hens here. Thought about it but if my husband is out of town here I'd have no nice son next door to help me put them up at night. But my future daughter-in-law keeps us well supplied with eggs from their hens! And we get to go visit the ladies there and take them bananas when we go.
DeleteWell, you are all set then!! We supply our kids/grandkids with eggs. Bananas! I have never heard of giving chickens bananas. Will offer our girls some soon!! Thanks for telling me.

DeleteThere is something so cosy and homely about watching content chickens scratch and feed in peace and quiet! I know they are not always peaceful, and expect sometimes a squabble will break out, but generally, it is such a nice thing to see.
ReplyDeleteOurs make a cooing sound sometimes that I just love. The Dominiques are a mellow breed and don't really 'squabble' much. They will make a loud noise if they are laying an egg and another hen wants to be where they are.
