August is a lovely time of the year in New England. It can be horribly hot and steamy and enervating in the daytime. As a reward for this discomfort comes a night that is pure enchantment, flooded with cool, silver moonlight, sweet with flower scent, quiet as deep-running rivers. In fact, I sometimes think that you never get a perfect summer night without having a hot day first. For the heat mellows the land.
Gladys Taber
Beautiful quote!
ReplyDeleteExactly the kind of evenings we are having now.
Nan, I love the sweet pea picture on the header of your blog!
ReplyDeleteOh, let's savor the summer nights!
ReplyDeleteSo true! We're hoping for a perfect summer night tonight...now that the thunderstorms have moved east.
ReplyDeleteI love Gladys Taber. I've been reading her books since I was a teenager (and that was a long time ago, believe me!). To me, August is the gateway to autumn, which is my favorite season, so it has always been a favorite month of mine; although not so much as September and October. Gladys's writings of autumn at Stillmeadow are so evocative.
ReplyDeleteAnother writer I enjoy is Hal Borland. If you haven't read him, you ought to check him out. He also lived in Connecticut and wrote essays about life in the country. He and Gladys are two of my favorite nonfiction writers.
Here, too, Island sparrow. Just lovely. I'm so grateful for the cool at the end of a hot day.
ReplyDeleteSherri, thanks. The colors are just gorgeous.
Pom Pom, ah yes.
JoAnn, the forecast here was scattered thunderstorms but they never came near us. Just wind.
Jill, are you a member of the Friends of Gladys Taber?? More info here, if you are interested:

I know that GT talks about Borland a lot and I really should pick up one of his books.
