Library Loot/August 17

Library Loot is hosted by Eva at A Striped Armchair and Marg at Reading Adventures.

I've been meaning to read some Elizabeth Taylor (the other Elizabeth Taylor!) for a long time so I picked up two of her books, and have begun In A Summer Season. And then I asked the children's librarian what she recommended for some J and YA books. I grabbed everything she suggested, and came home with a pile! I've already started Coraline.

Addendum: I got two thirds through Coraline and gave it up. I just didn't care about it. I read In a Summer Season and liked it (mostly). Brought all the others back unread because I've bought some books recently and wanted to concentrate on reading them. Will get Mrs Palfrey another time.

  1. I'm sure you will love Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont, Nan. Then you can watch the film with Joan Plowright in the title role. I'm usually disappointed when I see the film of the book but this was excellent.

  2. I love Elizabeth Taylor's Mrs Palfrey at the Clairmont, it was made into a good film with Joan Plowright in the leading role. I don't know the other one at all.
You seem to have a very good library, how lovely. I was taken to our local library weekly as a small child, and later I took my own children. They loved it as much as I had.

  3. Hello Dear Nan!

It was so nice to hear from you my friend.:o) I too have been going through my books looking for that special something. I decided to revisit the book Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach. It has been many years since I picked it up and I am looking forward to spending some time with it. Enjoy your reads and enjoy a beautiful week.:o)

    Smiles...

  7. Hi Nan: You are indeed in for a treat, when you read Mrs. Palfry. It is a lovely book, and the movie was wonderful as well. Enjoy.

  8. Maureen, I have Mrs P in the Netflix queue but wanted to read it first. I love Joan Plowright.

Carole, so far I am loving In A Summer Season. I first read about it years ago in the Bas Bleu catalogue.

I am so grateful that my library doesn't cull out all the old books and I just emailed and told them!

Beverly, I remember liking the Breathnach book when I read it. I'll be interested to hear if it is still meaningful to you.

Pamela, and I thank you for writing!

Vintage Reading, I can barely put down In a Summer Season. Though published in 1961, it feels as current as can be. She's a great writer.

JoAnn, I had picked up Coraline before and found it a bit scary. :<) But recently read a blogger's piece about it (I'll note it in my report) and decided to try again. And ET is just great!

Donna, I'm looking forward to it. If you can get a hold of In A Summer Season, I think you'd like it.

  9. Oh, Coraline - very enjoyable book! There's one part though that really freaked me out...I'll be interested to hear if it freaks you out too!

  10. Did you sneak onto my property to take a photo of my Cupani sweet peas?

  11. Colleen, so far the whole idea freaks me out a bit. :<)

Margaret, I didn't want to wake you and the chap up. :<) They are Old Spice sweet peas from High Mowing Seeds or "a fragrant heirloom sweet pea mix" from Kitchen Garden Seeds. Probably the Cupani is part of the latter. What a smell!

  12. Oh, Coraline is so deliciously creepy. And I see you have Susan Patron's Lucky. Very good book, ridiculous fuss kicked up about her vocab choice initially. (and she's a librarian to boot, whoo hoo!)

  13. What a lovely stack of books! I'm curious what Memories of Summer is about. I'll wait for your book report. :)

  14. Susan, the librarian told me about the 'fuss.' Now really, as if kids haven't heard way worse words. :<) I like your description of Coraline.

Les, the author of Memories of Summer, Ruth White, is a particular favorite of my librarian so she offered me two by her.
