The essence of summer suppers

We have three favorite meals that I make only in summertime. I made a little vow to myself years ago that I would eat tomatoes only when they are fresh and local or from my own plants. They are heavenly. The other times of the year they come from God-knows-where and are, as they say, like cardboard plus being expensive. So when summer comes we eat and eat them. I also never buy fresh basil any other time of year, and usually have enough that I have grown myself.

Hummus (which I do make other times of the year, sans tomatoes)

Pesto

Tabouli

  1. You have me stumped. I expected three recipes with tomatoes as the center of the recipe. Did I miss something?

    1. Well, maybe not a tomato centered dish but tomatoes in it. Tomatoes in tabouli and with the hummus, and basil in the pesto.

  2. Like you, I mostly eat fruit and veg that is in season and grown locally (or at least regionally). My supermarket - only 5 minutes on foot from my place - is rather good at that, and as I do not have a garden, I am glad about that.
I made tabouleh only a couple of weeks ago for our Friday night supper; when O.K. spends the weekend with me, it can get rather late until he arrives here after a two-hour drive on busy motorways, and a light meal that can be ready in an instant is best.

    1. 5 minutes! How great! Actually in our state, August is "eat local" month.

  3. These look so tasty and light for these very hot and humid days. Thanks for the ideas - always looking for something different. And my basil is ready to be made into pesto so that's on my list.
Love the flowers in your header - my dad called them spider plants, if I recall. Very lovely. And I always think of the cosmos in the movie version of The Color Purple.

    1. They are indeed!! I love the spider plant name, and how nice you remember.

  4. Mmm, my favourite foods. Home-made hummus is nothing like the stuff you can buy. My problem is quantities. Tabbouli for one? Tricky.

    1. You are so right!
My batch of tabouli is three single meals, and is good for at least two days (never had it longer!)

  5. We eat homemade hummus regularly but I had forgotten completely about tabouli. Ah -- to next week's menu plan. Thank you for the reminder. And yes, we eat all the locally grown produce we possibly can this time of year, tomatoes especially of course.

    1. I just made some more today. I do my own sprouts to put on top. Yum.
