British Isles Friday - The Queen and the future Kings

I am finally putting up a post for British Isles Friday, a weekly event which may be found here. It is rather the perfect thing for me who reads mostly British books, and watches pretty much only British television, and follows many of the Royals on Instagram! In fact my first entry for this weekly event is a photograph I saw on Instagram. You may read more about it in The Guardian here.

I found it such a touching photo. That dear little boy. He has such presence already. It seems like a minute ago his father was his age. The generations match my own family. Tom's mother is almost the Queen's age. Charles and I were both born in 1948. William was born a month before Margaret, and George was born five months before Hazel.

If you are interested, you may read about the succession to the British throne here.

  1. I didn't think about the Royals being on Instagram! I'm a royalist too so will have to look. I'm sure the queen is proud of her three heirs. I'm a fan of Charles and hope he has his time on the throne before William ascends. And that little one, what will his future hold?

    1. It is really so much fun! And you see how very hard they work!
I love all his gardening work, and would love to visit Highgrove. Who knows who will be the next king?

  2. What a nice photo, I agree. Thanks for the link about succession. I had no clue. All of this is in the news with Harry and Megan's decision.

    1. That's kinda why Harry can lead a different life. He's way down in the line now.

  3. I've seen that photo and think it's really a great photo. The royal family is certainly going through some trying times right now. It's sad.

    1. Royalty certainly doesn't mean a worry-free life, does it? They are just like all of us in that way.

  4. With the news of the past couple of days added to the speculation about Andrew, this family must be in turmoil right now. I don't envy them their troubles. The world is changing so quickly that even the Royals are struggling to maintain some sense of tradition anymore.

    1. They've certainly had troubles before, even worse than these I think. And yet, the Queen shows such grace, such forbearance.

  5. The Queen looks actually happy and proud in this picture - a rarity! I wonder whose idea it was that Charles and George stand on a higher step than the Queen (who is small but not "small" at all!) and William.

    1. That's interesting because often when I see her, she looks happy. As I said, I follow on Instagram and she is always featured giving out awards, or visiting organizations and smiling.
And I hadn't even noticed the steps!! I can't imagine the reason.

  6. I'm quite surprised to find you a royalist! That photo is everywhere at the moment, presumably to reassure people that whatever happens, the succession is safe.
There is very little sympathy for Prince Harry here and plenty for the Queen. There is talk of Prince Charles becoming Regent when the Queen is ninety-five or perhaps when the Duke of Edinburgh dies.

    1. I know. It makes no sense, does it?! And I am a fan of all of them. I've never taken "sides".
I wonder what Charles feels about it all? I know I'm kinda tired at his age, and I wouldn't want to be a Queen now. I'd rather it be my child.
Interesting about the "sympathy". I have no idea what people here think.

  7. I remarked to a friend that watching The Crown is like watching a superior soap-opera, and wondered if it was based on solid fact or was more aligned to speculation. Bit of both I suspect. But goodness me, they're now going through it again, I feel so sorry for them all because no matter what the media say there are always two sides to every story. *That* however is a charming photo and I love it. I hadn't noticed before how much Prince George looks like his grandpa!

    1. Tom watches it faithfully, and I just can't do it. I'm funny about fictionalized versions of real people, especially if they are alive.
We thought George has an expression like Edward, the one who abdicated.
I like your "two sides" statement, and I know I see both sides. I think they are being brave and modern to forge a different kind of life. He is so far down on the "King" list that he can look at other ways of living. But it feels a bit rushed. As you know I don't read much news but even I have gotten trickles of info that the press haven't been kind to those two. I like the idea that they are communicating via social media without dealing with newspapers. (I think I understood that right.) Those boys have seen the negative power of the press their whole lives.

  8. I love British Isles Friday and try and participate every week. Nice photo. I’ve seen it all over the news and while I am like you, not taking sides, I’ve always felt a bit sorry for those born into the monarchy whee your future is decided for you.

  9. I love that photo... I follow the Royal Family, but don’t do Instagram. Just read everything that pops up. And honestly almost all we ever watch is British TV. And some Australian thrown in on Acorn. But did you watch The Crown? That was on Netflix. If you did, I’d be curious what you think of it.

      Do you also get Britbox?

  11. Such a charming photo. I'm listening to Michelle Obama's memoir and she had really terrific interactions with the Queen. I loved hearing those stories.

    1. It is charming. Perfect adjective. I've heard that, because Tom read her book.
