Gosh, I haven't participated in memes for ages, but this one... I could not resist! What a brilliant idea for St. Valentine's Day!
Mine are not in any particular order. Not all are people!

ReplyDeleteI don't care for that series. I know that I am probably the only reader on earth that doesn't love it! I read a couple, and didn't want to go on.
DeleteI know to have pencil and paper handy when I visit you, Nan. I've written down all the ones I haven't read: Amelia Peabody series, Nuala series, Laurie Colwin's because even though I read all her novels years ago I'm sure I would love this again. And I even wrote down Lord Emsworth and the Empress book, trusting that Nan would not lead me wrong, despite the fact that I never learned to appreciate Wodehouse. I think I only tried one about Jeeves.
ReplyDeleteOh, boy what a treat you have in store with Amelia!! They should be read in order because life definitely changes as the series goes along. Wonderful, wonderful books! The Laurie Colwin is wonderful. I wrote about it here: https://lettersfromahillfarm.blogspot.com/2009/02/happy-all-time-by-laurie-colwin.html 10 years ago! No wonder I had to look up their names!! I just added a note that the Empress is a pig! I am wild about Wodehouse.

I was so glad to be reminded of Mrs. Mike. Haven't thought of it in ages--I love it in my twenties.
And of course, Charlotte's Web is if not the best, then one of the best children's books ever. And not just for children!
And Little Men--great thinking! What a treat!
What a nice list, very varied. I love Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, and Nick and Nora Charles. We recently watched The Thin Man movie, or maybe it was After the Thin Man. I did like the book too.

ReplyDeleteI suspect the list says more about the maker than the couples, don't you think? Honorable mention would have been Chet and Bernie - a detective and his dog in the series by Spencer Quinn.

DeleteWonderful choices! Aren't those Nuala books lovely. The Da Silvas are such a great couple. And Ceylon in the 30s is a place/time I knew nothing about.

ReplyDeleteI haven't. You know, I first heard of Wodehouse when Laurie and Fry did the show. I went on to read and read and read, and now I can't even watch the show. They did something weird with combining stories or something. As for Blandings, the characters are so vivid in my mind that I don't think I can bear to see anyone act them. Isn't that funny? But that's the way I feel.
DeleteOh what a lot of fun NaN! I know some of these couples well and realize I miss some of them and must drop in to visit once again. (Jo and her Professor and the Wodehouse.., I haven’t read them in way too long a time). There are a couple new to me of new couples there too and as always thank you.

DeleteThis is a superbly original list. It’s really got me thinking, I love Bernie and Chet - one of the few books that really captures how dogs and humans really interact.

Thank you! I agree with you about Bernie and Chet. I have read only the first two. I quit because he had to go to the vet and I got nervous, but there have been many books since, so I know he is alright!
DeleteEvery time you mention Wodehouse, I want to re-read all the books I read when I first started working at the library, back in 1986. I wonder if I'll ever actually do it!
ReplyDeleteI think I began sometime in the late 1990s, but am not positive. And I have done some rereading. Just as fresh as the first time. I never tire of him. What I'm trying to get to is a biography and his letters. Big thick books sitting next to me, waiting, waiting.
