An old, yellowed newspaper clipping

Many years ago I read something my mother had cut out of a newspaper. I've thought about it occasionally and wondered if I still had it. I've been going through a tub of photos and memorabilia lately, and was so pleased to come upon the clipping.

If you are not religious, please do not be put off with the fact it is a prayer. The words are most meaningful, and truly are a guide to living as we get older. There is great wisdom and humor.

I looked it up on the internet and found out that it is a seventeenth century anonymous nun's prayer.

    1. It must have meant something to my mother to have kept it. And I'm so glad to have found it. Now, I need to abide by those words. :<))

    1. I smiled, too. Think of it being so old! Things really don't change through the ages, do they?!

  3. Such a wry self-knowledge in these simple words! I think everyone past a certain age must recognize themselves in this, a little or a lot. Thank you for sharing it.

    1. Isn't 'wry' just the perfect word?! I do indeed recognize myself.

  4. I love this!! It does not sound at all like something written in the 17th century, but I suppose the choice of words, grammar and spelling has been adapted a little.

  6. I love it, especially the 'reasonably sweet'! It cuts right through the piety of some prayers. Thank you for sharing it.

  11. It is just as relevant today as in the 17th century! There's not one thing mentioned that I feel comfortable thinking I don't have a problem with it, at times. Pinned it to keep it!

  12. I guess people have been the same for eons! Although I do have that poem/prayer in my "book where I keep poems and quotes"* at my age I cannot be reminded of its wisdom too often! I did not know that this piece was written so long ago .... I wonder how old 'old' was back then? Younger than I am now I should imagine.

*I need a better name for my book full of clippings and notes, but have never come up with one.... though I've kept this kind of book for almost as long as this poem has been around ;>)

  13. Well, doesn't this just resonate with me! (I'll spare you the endless details of why, lol).
