Today's poem by Robert Frost

Dust of Snow

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

From New Hampshire  1923
Robert Frost (1874-1963)

  1. Fun poem. Those crows can be entertaining. This picture looks cold. We drove through some sloppy snow on the way home from Michigan yesterday. Today it is cold yet sunny. Wonderful.

    1. We are exceedingly fond of crows. They are such humorous looking creatures as they walk around. It almost seems as if they would prefer to walk rather than fly.
Temps are in the 30s this day.

  2. This poem really spoke to me today even though we just had rain!

    1. Snow always lifts my spirits. It has pretty much stopped now, but I'm hoping it will stay on the ground.

    1. Your words could be from an Edgar Guest poem!
I'm sad we don't use the word 'call' anymore. I love it.

Some days you need to be reminded of the essence of life and Mr Frost fits the bill :0)

  5. What I love about this poem is how it captures the changeability of moods. Yesterday I had a feeling of such emptiness in the afternoon, and all it took was a particular song and moving to it a little, and I felt more whole. Sometimes a mood we're in feels like it will last forever, though something small in our environment can quickly change it.

    1. Absolutely! And for me, that mood changer is always snow. How I love it (except for the worry of my kids driving in it!).

And boy, that's so true of music.

  6. Such a lovely poem, and a lovely thought that there is always something that lifts the worst of days, however small, and however unexpected it may be.

    1. I do so love Frost. He can say so much in sometimes just a few words.
A lot of times for me that 'lift' comes from comments on my blog. :<)

  7. This is wonderful- many thanks for posting it for us! A beautiful photo of him, too. And of the snowy lane.
His ability, as you note, to say so much in just a few words, feels haiku like to me. This poem in particular is of that sort. The imagery of snow, crow, and the shifting of mood - perfect.
I love this blog so much, might as well say it out loud, just for these wonderful things you put out there. Thank you so very much.

    2. Well, not on the road - on the lawns. :<)

  8. I love the simplicity of Frost's poetry. He sees straight to the heart of something and expresses it so clearly. He is one of my favourite poets.

    1. Well, it was sure perfect for me the early part of today. We got our dusting and then it melted. But when it was snowing I felt such joy. I do love winter.
