Library Loot - October 6

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library.

I am a kid in a candy shop when it comes to the library. It is a minor miracle to me that I can just walk in and borrow all these books. I always, always bring home more than I can usually read in three weeks, or even six if I renew. And then of course there are the books I've ILLed. Another minor miracle.

 The children's books

The grown-up books

You'll notice a few Canadian books for the 6th Canadian Reading Challenge. Raining outside, woodstove going inside - a perfect day for reading.

  1. Dear Nan,
I love library books too! I just did a book review a couple of posts ago about the book "Sailing Alone Around The World." Check it out if you get a chance and read the comment from Andi,
    Les's Mom from Prairie Horizons.
And I think I love children's books as much as you do!
Hope you have a wonderful October.

    1. I surely will. Is that the book Rod annotated?? Andi is a great reader.
There are so many delights up in the children's room, and we have a very knowledgeable library who guides me to titles.

  2. At the library where I was trained and worked as a librarian, people check out media for four weeks with the option on 2 renewals, so all in all, they can keep a book or DVD etc. for as long as 3 months. I have the advantage of my Mum going there at least once a week anyway, and she usually brings back something I'll be interested in, too, or I can even ask her to check out a specific book for me. They also offer ebooks, but unfortunately not in the kindle format.

    1. That's one of the advantages of the Nook - that the library offers downloadable books for it. The newer Kindles work, but I have the original which doesn't. Even though it feel a bit like conspicuous consumption owning both, I am glad I do.
I love that your mother knows what you like in books. Dear woman.

  3. I, too, feel libraries are a minor miracle and I have my whole life, even as a very small child. Great stack, I will be looking for them at my library :)

    1. I've begun Getting Married in Buffalo Jump, and am really liking it. Did you ever see the movie with the handsome Paul Gross? I remember seeing it when the kids were little. Not available on Netflix now though.

  4. I love going to the library and often check out their DVD's too. We are so fortunate to have all those books at our fingertips. That was the first place I always stopped on my way home from school. The librarians were always willing to help me with my homework.
My latest library find was Invisible by Lorena McCourtney.

  5. I've had a lifelong love affair with libraries. I was reminded of how blessed we are when I interviewed a young Russian woman years ago. She had grown up in Moscow where only Communist party members were allowed to enter the library and check out books. When she came here and hesitantly entered the public library, she was flabbergasted that not only could she go in and read any book on the shelves, she could even be issued a library card and check out books. What a great country we live in!

    1. All the little things we take for granted. Wonderful story! Thanks for telling me.

  6. Hi Nan,

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone...I can NEVER seem to leave the library w/ only 2-3 books! And you know you might be a book addict when the librarians are on a first name basis w/ you! :)

    1. You are not alone. :<)
One of my librarians is a woman I grew up with, and another is the aunt of my daughter's friend. Small towns.

  7. I remember going to the library every 2 weeks as a kid -- it was the highlight of my month! And I recently took my grandsons. We checked out a bunch of books and they said, "Grandma, where do you pay?" I had to explain to them we were just borrowing, not buying. I notice you have a Hal Borland in your stack. I love his writing. Right now I'm reading "Twelve Moons of the Year," and I'm in the month of October. His descriptions of New England in the fall are so evocative. I wish I could see it for myself. Maybe someday ...

    1. That is so dear about the boys.
This is my first Hal Borland. Gladys Taber talks about him so often, and yet, I've never read him. Hope I get to it, but if not, I'll borrow it or another book soon.
Fall takes a while in NE. We in the north get the colors and lose the colors first, then it makes its way south. :<)

  8. Libraries have been a love of my life for over 50 years. I would be lost without one.

I'm going to look into Getting Married in Buffalo Jump.

  9. I feel just like that about libraries -- my favorite place wherever we are! I'm not a book blogger (well, you know that) but I think I'll drop by that meme and check out what others are checking out! Your stack of books looks quite impressive. The one I want to open (and I'll go to Amazon and do that right now) is 'the Old Woman Who Named Things." It just sounds like one that'll go on one of my lists (Library or Kindle).... Thanks for this fun post!!

    1. It must be great fun to wander through new ones. I am not a book blogger either! You should do the meme. That book sounded so touching to me that I had to read it.

  10. What would we do without libraries? I could never afford to purchase all of the books that are available for free at the library. Even if I'm late returning them and have a fine, libraries are an awesome bargain!

    1. I just told Tom the other day that I might never buy another book. Between the physical library, the downloadable books library, and the ones on my shelves, I think I am quite set for a long time.
