Quote du jour/Colette

You must not pity me because my sixtieth year finds me still astonished. To be astonished is one of the surest ways of not growing old too quickly.

Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette
(1873-1954)

  1. That Colette was a corker until the end.

  2. I like the quote - I rather like Colette. I picked up some of her books in a charity shop once, including the autobiographical My Mother's House, and thoroughly enjoyed them. Not at all what I had been expecting.

    1. I want to read this. I haven't read anything by her, just about her. :<)

  3. Colette certainly was a colorful character! I'm planning to read Gigi next week for Paris in July.

    1. I watched it again not so long ago, and loved it. I bought the soundtrack which I have on vinyl as well. Great. She was quite the scandalous girl. I told Margaret about one of her affairs, and she said 'just like Woody Allen.'

  4. Wonderful quote!

I love your new header photo! The daylilies are lovely and your doors are so pretty in that blue.

    1. We do love our 'tomie de paola' doors. The orange day lilies are everywhere on our land these days. Their shining time.

  5. Count me in. Still in my fifties, but suitably astonished quite often!

    1. Isn't 'astonished' a great word? We all say 'amazed' now, but it isn't quite the same, is it?

  6. I hadn't realized until you said this, Nan, that "astonished" was a word on its way out. You're right. One often hears "how amazing!" but rarely "how astonishing!" We should try to bring it back. In the very nice Colette quotation, certainly "amazed" would not be as good.

  7. Can I say I am astonished (at the loveliness of this quote and this post)? At 72 I want to be astonished as often as I can.
