We fans of Inspector Morse, particularly the televised version based on the books by Colin Dexter, may be forgiven for feeling the same way about him. John Thaw made us believe that he was Morse, and it was all too eerie when he died a couple years after Morse died on the television episode, The Remorseful Day.

In 2006, the wonderful Lewis, or Inspector Lewis as it is known in the US, debuted, with Lewis played by the original actor, Kevin Whately. It was all we could hope for. There were occasional homages to Morse, but mostly the series, with the addition of Lewis' partner Hathaway, played by Laurence Fox, has stood on its own. Sadly, I have read that the end may be near for the show. Season 5 will be on PBS from July 8 - July 29.
And tonight we have Endeavour, about Morse' early days as a policeman. An extra treat is that Thaw's daughter, Abigail has a role in tonight's episode.
And Colin Dexter, the man who began the whole thing, makes a cameo appearance.

DeleteI'll be recording tonight. We've been watching the Olympic Trials so we may not watch it until later in the week. But....I am so excited about new Lewis episodes. I clapped my hands when we saw a preview. Hubby laughed and said that Lewis really was my favorite show wasn't it? And it is. My very favorite.

DeleteI am so happy with the idea of Endeavour! Equally unhappy that Lewis will be ending. All that wonderful Oxford scenery, intelligent dialogue, poetry quoting- oh dear. Where else would a character note the "Iris Murdoch style of decorating"? Good stuff,always.

That's a great quote. I'm tempted to buy the whole Morse series, and Lewis if it ends. Hoping tonight is the beginning of a new episode. Maybe sometime we'll meet a younger Lewis too. So fun.
DeleteI'm really looking forward to this. My husband and I have already decided to forgo the 45th Anniversary Picnic of our church for this Masterpiece program. As if it was a hard decision...I loathe crowds! Anyway, PBS is about the only station I ever watch as it so rarely disappoints.

DeleteI read your blog a half hour before Endeavor aired. We thoroughly enjoyed watching it. How interesting to know that was Thaw's daughter playing that role. She did an amazing job. I've seen Lewis a couple of times. I think I'll look for it now. Thanks so much!

DeleteWhat??? He wasn't real?? Just kidding...but the character feels as if he actually walked those streets and solved those crimes!! I will have to check out the series and send the link to my son in Japan. He's been getting into this lately!!

DeleteI had to record this onthe DVR because we were watching the gymnastics finals (we has a gymnast wannabe in the family), but I can't wait to watch Endeavor, and now you have made it sound even better. I have read and loved all the Inspector Morse books except the final book.

DeleteI'm just catching up on missed posts while I was in MN, Nan, and so glad to read this and Endeavor. Of course, I missed it, but, will catch it on one of the many repeats that are sure to be on this week yet. I have loved Morris and Lewis and all of these series. I just might put both on my wishlist as well.

We watched this! We loved it. But I was disappointed to see that it was just a one-off. Do you know if there will be any further shows (sequels to the prequel?)in this series?
