Usually when we get a heavy, wet snowfall or straight-line winds. Fortunately, the outage has only last a few hours--never overnight! I'm glad the tree was far enough away from the house. Our neighborhood has HUGE trees that are very old and I worry that one of these days one of our neighbors' will come crashing down on our house or garage. Rod wouldn't mind the garage so much. Our power goes out a fair bit- we have a lot of wind, and also we're at the end of the power grid or line or whatever so we are often the last ones fixed up. This wasn't an area wide one though so they've gotten to it quickly. We have lived in this house for 10 years and had a couple that lasted an hour. We have a wood burner and a gas camp stove in case of emergencies, but so far not!
