Quote du jour/from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

In a letter, a woman writes to another:

"Excuse my unburdening myself. My worries travel about my head on their well-worn path, and it is a relief to put them on paper."

Isn't that a perfect description of worrying. I love "well-worn path".

I am rereading this wonderful book, and I think I love it even more than last time. I wrote about it here, in 2008!!

  1. I read this in 2008 and again in 2018. Loved it even more the second time around. I only wish the movie had been better. So much of the story had been changed, not to mention the omission of two major characters. I'm not sorry I watched the film, but I am sorry I watched it so soon after finishing the novel.

    1. I watched the movie late last year, after avoiding it all that time. I didn't hate it, and it had been so long since I'd read the book that I was able to see it as a fresh movie rather than compare it to the book.

  2. I have that book as one of my all time favorites. I've read it at least three times. Too bad the author passed away because I bet she would have written other great books.

    1. One of them did write others, and I bought one but haven't read it yet. The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows.

  3. I've read the Guernsey book 3 times - went back and looked. Once in 2008, once in 2009, and once last year in May (for a book group here). Loved it each time. Have not watched the movie and likely won't. Probably wouldn't love the movie. LOL

    1. I'm thrilled that a recent book group is reading it. So often, the older books get lost. When Margaret saw mine on the shelf, she brought it home, and read it again. She's still a tremendous reader. And Hazel isn't. Life is funny. I told someone that I really believer a love of reading is something one is born with. I wouldn't say not to watch the movie. In fact, I might watch again. I am reading the book again because I dropped a nonfiction book about the Channel Islands during the war. It was written by John Nettles, the star of Midsomer Murders and Bergerac, which takes place there. It was very good but I just couldn't take it. NOT Mr. Churchill's finest hour. They were just left with no support from England until near the end. Their lives were a horror. You see it in the Guernsey book too, but because there are characters, and another subject comes up, it doesn't drag me down with what it was like.

  4. In the past, I felt like I didn't have time to reread books. I was always on the lookout for the Next New Books. But I have recently discovered the joy of rereading, and it seems like most of my books are now rereads.
