Today's picture - Old bookmarks

Do you remember the early days of Amazon when they included bookmarks in the book orders? I still have two of them. I have a couple little drawers of special bookmarks and these are among them.

  1. I don't remember that but, then I'm a tosser or, perhaps I even gave it away when I donated the books. (I like the ...when you see a man a book.....)

    1. I do, too! I'm quite sure this quote is what introduced me to Christopher Morley!

  2. As most of my Amazon orders were for my kindle, I never had many of their bookmarks, but I have quite a few bookmarks that came with books that were birthday or Christmas gifts. Right now, I am reading Barack Obama's latest book, and am using an invoice for another book as a bookmark - not very stylish, but useful :-)
I would also say if you give someone a book, you give them a whole world!

    1. I think the bookmarks were in the really early days. My first order was in 1997!
And I agree with your last sentence!

  3. No, I don't remember 'that'. Possibly it was only in America? The Book Depository are the people who still do that and it's part of the thrill of opening any books from them, to see what kind of book mark they've included.

    Happy Easter, Nan!

  4. I love this, Nan. I also have a little collection of bookmarks from the days when bookstores gave them with a book purchase and others. None from Amazon, though. I made some out of paint sample strips, beads, and yarn too.

    1. Yes, some of mine are from bookstores that don't exist anymore. I never use them, but I do look through them several times a year.

  5. I have a couple of those blue ones - on the right - put away in a stack of bookmarks that I slowly work my way through. I don't throw away a bookmark, though, until it's really frazzled (I'm more likely to lose them than to wear them out), so it takes a long time. Heck, one of the ones I'm still using is from the Richmond Library in London from the nineties when I lived there. It's looking pretty bad now. :-)

    1. I don't even use any of mine. haha. I use a woven one a friend made for me ages ago. As I said above, I do look through my bookmarks several times a year. I love them.

  6. I don't usually order from Amazon. I am more of a Barnes and Noble or Timber Press purchaser. I do like these bookmarks. I sort of collect bookmarks. They are a cheap and easy find for a keepsake of a trip when you are traveling.

    1. I have helped build up that company, I'll tell ya!
And yes, they make great souvenirs!

  7. Just in the last few months, I have started putting bookmarks in one consistent place so I can grab when needed. It is so much nicer than using an old envelope! My library often gives one away at the check out area.

    1. Mine have really become sort of period pieces with so many of the bookstores long gone.

  8. I still keep a boxful of special bookmarks, even though I read almost exclusively on Kindle now. A few special from Amazon orders way back when, but more were gifts inside cards or even there were greeting cards that had tear-off bookmarks as a flap on the card itself. There was one line of those from a nature artist that I just loved. Marjorie something...too lazy right now to walk into the bedroom where my keepsake box lives. I do miss “real” books sometimes. Of course not just because I don’t use my bookmark collection. But Kindle is easier for old eyes and much easier to travel with (even if it’s just travel to the parking lot to read while I wait for the grocery order. ))

    1. I know the artist you mean! Wait, I've got nuthin' to do ... Bastin! And I have seen those greeting cards.
As I've said, I read only the Kindle at night so my print books take a lot longer for me to get through because I tend to not read as much during the day, though I am working to change that.

  9. Book Depository still do this - I remember my old boss at the library used to collect them from our second-hand orders and try to get all the sets! I have an old Turkish Delight with nice bookmarks and postcards I use as bookmarks in - as my cats are card chewers!

  10. Adding to my comment - I have a few from Daedulus - spelling? - Books, very interesting. I still get their catalogue. Do you remember the Common Reader book catalogue? I loved it. Wonderful books!

    1. I have gotten the D. catalouge a few times in past years.
Oh, the Common Reader. Such joy when that would show up. Each catalogue was itself a book. I so wish I had saved mine. When Tom's father died, I found a treat among his books - a catalogue. I treasure it. I met so many authors through those pages. Thank you for mentioning it.

  11. I never had a bookmark from Amazon but I still have a fridge magnet (that I've kept on my filing cabinet) from them. It has a quote purported to be from Cicero: "A room without books is like a body without a soul." Must have been early days indeed.

    1. Wow! A magnet! I do love that quote. My history at Amazon says 1997 is when I bought my first books!
