Blueberries - 2020 Report

I just went looking through the blog, and apparently I didn't post about the blueberries last year. I'm so surprised because I had been doing so for a few years.

Anyhow, today was the last of the blueberries we bought from our neighbor.

This year the price was $5.75 per quart, down from $6 two years ago. Who knows why? What I do know is that there weren't very many - 17 quarts in all.

July 30 - 4 quarts

August 2 - 3 quarts

August 4 - 3 quarts

August 6 - 3 quarts

August 10 - 2 quarts

August 12 - 2 quarts

In 2018, we got 26 quarts, and we thought that was a small amount!  In 2017, 43 quarts. In 2016, 61 quarts!

We are friendly enough with this man and his wife, and in fact sell them a dozen eggs a week, but we don't know them well enough to comfortably ask them why they think there has been such a steady decrease each year. One year, I did give the man a list of the differences in amounts for a couple years, but he gave no response. I sure wish I knew how many we got last year!

We've eaten quite a few fresh, and the rest are frozen for breakfast smoothies.

  1. There was a major blueberry shortage in the mid-Atlantic this year thanks to a late killing frost. Maybe you had something similar.

  2. At "my" supermarket, they sell organic blueberries, and I regularly have them on my granola in morning - lovely! Asking your neighbour about the decreasing amount of blueberries is, in my opinion, a legitimate and friendly question that simply shows your interest; do you think he would be somehow offended or find such a question intrusive?

    1. He is getting older, and maybe would be feel badly that he isn't able to spend so much time picking. He has just stopped mowing his field himself.

  3. We normally pick at a blueberry farm not too far from where we live. For some reason they didn't open this year. I don't know if it was Covid related or if the berries just didn't produce well enough due to our crazy spring weather this year. I remember you posting about your blueberry reports. It is interesting to know how many you keep.

    1. I mean to use the blog in that way - you wouldn't believe how often I refer to it about various subjects!

  5. We used to always pick our own blueberries from a farm near our Chautauqua cottage...It feels long ago but blueberries are one of my favorite fruits...

  7. Blueberries are not my favorite fruit but they taste so good when newly picked! I have put on a few pounds since March and although it is my own fault (potato chips and candy bars are not a meal) I haven't done much about it. But last week I read that one should have a bowl of blueberries in front of one's computer while doing Zoom calls, etc. for work and nibble as needed. Then one won't be craving chocolate all the time! So far I keep forgetting to do it but maybe tomorrow I will be motivated.

    1. When they are fresh, they are just so good! I actually would rather eat berries or apples than chocolate. I know, I know. Weird.
