John Prine has been the soundtrack of my life. It was hard to choose one song to honor him but I decided this is the one that I hope he is living right now. May he be enjoying that vodka and ginger ale cocktail and the nine miles long cigarette.
John Prine
1946-2020
The news about John Prine was so sad...For two years after my husband died I just could not listen to music. Then last one night (I couldn't sleep well, either) there was an Austin City Limits program on with John Prine and he gave music back to me.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you for telling me this. It means so much that you shared this with me.
DeleteI was heartbroken when I learned of his death last night. One of my favorite songs of all time is Hello In There, which Rod plays (and sings) beautifully on his guitar. I'm so sad for Prine's family, as well as his music family. He and Kris were great friends and this is bound to be a terrible loss for him, too.
ReplyDeleteThat song changed how I looked at people who were older. I began smiling at older people when I walked down the street, though even as a child I was fond of and drawn to old people.
DeleteMy son noted his passing on his FB page - one of John's songs was included in their wedding. The "boy"has good taste, doesn't he? We are saddened by this loss.
ReplyDeleteThanks for remembering him today, Nan.
Mary
What song? Yes, so very sad.
DeleteI was really saddened to hear that John Prine had not managed to beat the virus.
ReplyDeleteWhen it came to song writing the man's lyrics read like poetry. One example is a rather sad long of his that I really like called "This Cold War with You." It's kind of dark but the words just got stuck in my head the first time I heard the song.
The sun goes down and leaves me sad and blue
Even another night of this cold war with you
Though you won't speak and I won't speak it's true
Two stubborn people with a cold war to go through
Oh, why oh why should love ever come
To a couple like you and me
Who's cold cold wars are never done
And hearts can't be free
So, let's do right or let's just say we're through
I just can't stand another cold cold war with you
The song is from John's "Pink Cadillac" album. The world was a better place with John Prine in it. He will be missed greatly.
Thank you so much for your response. I don't know that song. After he died, and his music is being played everywhere, I was astonished at how much I hadn't heard over the years. I own a few albums, but not all by any means.
DeleteAdmittedly, I have never heard of John Prine, but I agree about the vodka and ginger ale cocktail - it is one of my favourites! (Although it's been years since I last had one; somehow, those vodka bottles won at the pub quiz are standing unopened in my drinks cabinet.)
ReplyDeleteAll the best to you and your loved ones, dear Nan.
It is so interesting what singers and bands become popular in other countries and which don't. I find this when I watch British television. I often hear people I've not heard over here, and I usually buy their songs or their albums.
DeleteNan, thanks so much for putting this on today. I was really sad to hear that John Prine had died - Mr Mac said "Gawd! he's our age!" which rather put it all in perspective. I had no idea that he had suffered so many health issues in the last few years either, but he obviously lived to perform live, and I did get to see him once in the UK. I'm a fan of Iris de Ment, too, hence my choice of song on my own blog. Spent last evening having a Prine-fest!
ReplyDeleteI'm hearing him everywhere these days, and many memorials to him done by other singers.
DeleteWe saw him in concert with Iris DeMent opening . A long time ago, but we remember and were saddened.
ReplyDeleteLucky you! And it is just so sad.
