Local restaurants

All the restaurants and bars in the state have been ordered to close. So the local eateries are offering take-out only. There are all kinds of options. You can go in and pick it up, or they will leave the food outside for you to pick up, or they will bring it out to your car, and at least one has a delivery service and more are considering it.

My plan is to get take-out a few times a week to support our local restaurants. Yesterday we got delicious homemade Irish soda bread from our town restaurant run by a mother and daughter of Irish heritage. If we ate meat, we could have gotten corned beef and cabbage along with it.

Tonight we got pizza, and Tom got beer from the local brewery, which will also deliver if you want. Each place was very grateful.

  1. Nan - that is just the best idea! We know that local and small businesses will go to the wall very quickly if they have no customers, so to make the decision to support them is a brilliant one. None in my small town has started to offer this service yet (except for one Indian Restaurant which has always delivered anyway) and I will keep my eyes and ears open and take up a few options if/when they do. Meantime, I am big on the soup-making for the freezer! Here in the UK at present, the advice for over 70s is to stay at home as much as possible, if you have to go out, remember the 2 metre rule (i.e. stay about 6 ft from the next person). We can order grocery deliveries, but currently, supermarkets are telling us that they next slot is 3 WEEKs ahead! We are reading, listening to music, watching films and boxed sets on Amazon etc. The scrabble is coming out of the cupboard shortly. The freezer and store cupboard is full.
Sending virtual hugs to you and your readers. Stay safe and keep washing your hands. xx

    1. How I wish there was an Indian restaurant near me! We do not have grocery deliveries.
I keep hearing John Lennon's song - "Strange days, indeed. Most peculiar, Mama"

  2. What a brilliant idea, I'm hoping our local restaurants will do something similar. I've heard there are plans and if they come to fruition then we'll be making sure we use them as you are doing. Excellent pizza... no wonder Lucy is looking hopeful!

  3. What a good idea. We have one meal a ay as part of our monthly fee here at this CCRC. It's now delivery only as they closed the dining rooms, and Pub. I placed our order this morning: Baja Salad, asparagus soup and apple crumb pie for me and chicken sliders, cole slaw and the Pub dessert for Dan. Delivery at 12:30 today. I'll make corn chowder for dinner.

  4. Love your sharing your pizza, Nan! Yes, our restaurants are closed too and we've been picking up meals this week. So many are going to struggle with this. Memorable times for sure. And don't even get me started on the people at the grocery store - well, most are nice, but a few are just awful. I'm trying to be cheerful, helpful, and only take at most 2 of anything. After all, there are just 2 of us here. We'll get through this, but just goes to show how different life can be. You guys take care!

    1. I am so thankful for our local restaurants, and our beloved Co-op. I try to never shop the big stores, and would rather order kleenex, etc from Mr and Mrs Amazon!

  6. Like you, I want to support the local economy as much as I can, so I suppose ordering a meal with one of the restaurants nearby is on the cards this weekend - it is my birthday on Sunday anyway, so I deserve a treat.

  7. I commend you all for thinking of and buying take-out from your restaurants. A great idea for all of us.
PS...Nan, wonder what the kitties are looking at?

    1. I read something recently that Walmart will survive just fine, Starbucks will survive, but the little places are the ones in danger, the ones we need to support in this time (and really all the time!).

  8. We rarely eat out but the encouragement to order takeout in order to support local businesses has made us decide to do this a couple of times a week too. I think our first meal, after seeing your picture above, will be to a local independent artisan pizza place!

  9. That s smart and kind s will. Good for you! I honestly hadn’t thought of ordering takeout like that, was just feeling a bit smug because we’re making meals from what we have on hand .

  10. Our local restaurants are encouraging (asking) people to buy gift certificates, if they don't want to do takeout. It's 100% online and then you get your meal later. I suppose it's a risk if they go out of business, but we need to take care of each other now. There is also a GoFundMe for our local bartenders, who are all out of work since the bars are closed. Living in a small town means we know and support each other.

All that said, those are some delicious looking pizzas! Lucy appears to be hoping you can't finish yours!
