This is a coyote on the other side of the fence which surrounds the yard off the kitchen. When this was taken, Tom and I and Lucy the Labrador were on the porch. Lucy never smelled it. Not a bark from her. But isn't this a wonderful shot?! Addendum: I should have explained more carefully - the porch where we were sitting is on the other side of the house. That's why we couldn't see it, but I was surprised Lucy couldn't smell it. And another detail - the camera time says 7:37. I texted Matthew and Margaret at 7:42 telling them a coyote was walking down the road toward their house. They never did see it. Must have gone into the woods somewhere along the way. From the porch we saw it come across the lawn onto the road. So this same fellow went right past the porch and again, Lucy did not smell it. Pretty excitin' life up here!

ReplyDeleteThere are foxes in my state, but I have seen just one or two since we moved here in 1981. It was a lucky shot!
DeleteAmazing that it was so close and yet Lucy didn't detect it. They are stealthly. Wonderful shot. I have always wanted one of those trail cams to see what comes to the water feature at night. I know there are night visitors I just don't know who or what they are.
ReplyDeleteYes, they are stealthy, but this one has showed up in the daytime a few times this year. Haven't seen it since July. You ought to get one! What fun to see who comes!!
DeleteThis is a marvelous shot! I love the detail of the coyote's coat. I wonder what he was looking at. What a wonderful gift! Can you tell me more about the cam? It might be fun to get one to see what animals come into our backyard while we're not watching. We've seen deer and raccoons, but it would be fun to catch them with a camera.

ReplyDeleteThe man who gave it to us saw wild boars on his! Yuck. He's in Texas, though I think I've read they are in this state.
DeleteIt is a good shot and it kind of makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up! We even moved our bird feeder outside the gate where foxes, raccoons and possums wouldn't come inside the fence, hopefully. But a coyote near my dachshunds would terrify me!
ReplyDeleteYes, they will eat small dogs and cats, and I wouldn't want a little child to be alone outdoors if one was around either. I also wouldn't want a possum in my life! They creep me out!

DeleteWe had occasional coyotes in Illinois and neighbors were worried about their little dogs when they were spotted.
ReplyDeleteYes, they will get them. We lost two cats to coyotes years ago, and needless to say our cat is an indoor cat now.
DeleteNan - that makes me want to get a camera. Wonderful picture. I've never seen a Coyote up close, but we sure hear them at night - howling in the distance. We're in the Catskills of NY & have bears visit our deck for the birdseed - would be fun to capture one of those big guys. :)

ReplyDeleteHow does the camera work? Does it pick up movement and activate itself only then, or does it take pictures at certain intervals no matter whether there is an animal nearby or not?
My uncle has rigged up his own camera system close to the wood pile near his house, even with night vision, and has taken some really great videos of a family of ferrets living there. When the young ones started to appear and play in front of the camera, it was such a delight to watch them!
Yes, it is motion activated. I am not a fan of ferrets, at all!!
DeleteTerrific capture. Someone mentioned that we had a coyote and a young bobcat at our condo complex, kinda rare for our large complex. There are woods close by though.
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of stories of animals coming into towns. They get into garbage cans, and sometimes have to be relocated.

ReplyDeleteWe had a family of black bears rummaging through a dumpster at Dunkin' Donuts right in downtown Randolph about a month ago. Poor guys are hungry after a late spring and shrinking habitat.
What a sight they must have been!!
