German's Sweet Chocolate Brownies

Gosh, I haven't posted a recipe for, or even visited, Weekend Cooking for ages. I mean to, and think of it every Saturday, but I just haven't had a chance. You are probably familiar with German's Sweet Chocolate Cake, and I made it with Hazel Nina in November 2015. The recipe is here, if you are interested. Today I made the brownies.

German's Sweet Chocolate Brownies

Melt over very low heat - one 4-ounce package of Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate and 1/4 cup butter. Let it cool some.

I used the mixer but you could do all this by hand.

Mix together:
2 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat in the chocolate-butter mixture.

Stir in 1/2 flour. I used 1/4 cup whole wheat pastry and 1/4 cup all-purpose.
Stir in 1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts. I used walnuts.

Add to greased 8x8 inch pan with parchment paper in it.

Bake in pre-heated 350º f. oven for 25-30 minutes.

Carefully remove the parchment paper and cool the brownies on a cooling rack.

These were excellent!

  1. I've never used a box! Honestly all the brownie recipes I have are easy and fun to make. Oh, and delicious, of course! haha

  3. Oh, yum! I will try this. While I keep a box mix on hand, I love making brownies from good old scratch. Thanks for this recipe, Nan.

  4. You have really chosen a classic. My seventh grade cooking class made this recipe, and it's been a favorite ever since.

  5. It is interesting to me how simple so many recipes are without using the box mix, and they taste so much better without all those preservatives and who knows what-all chemicals they add. But I think the box has the psychological advantage...

    1. I guess I am quite amazed that so many people use a mix!

  6. I make these brownies like this all the time -- I have an unsweetened chocolate recipe and this, and they're basically the same except for the amount of added sugar. They are so fast to put together and so good.

  7. Brownies! They look wonderful.
I just made brownies to take to our family Father's Day celebration today. I just use a mix but you have to cook them less than what the recipe box says. Also, cut them and put them into cupcake papers, presentation means so much, especially with my baking! LOL!

  10. I bake very little these days (because if I do we eat it all) but I love brownies (and now we are back in Oregon and can share things with three younger generations who don't have to worry so much -- or at all -- about sugar and calories...). yummm.... next week!!

  11. I am a brownie fanatic but had gone quite a while without making any and was stunned to find the baking chocolate packages had shrunk! There used to be 8 squares per box, I swear!

I was brought up on the Mystery Chef's brownie recipe. I am away from home so can't attach it but it is moist and sweet, not too thick or cakey.
