Quote du jour/May Sarton

From At Seventy, writing of the poet Archibald MacLeish who had died at almost 90,

Two years ago I had a little word from him, saying, "Come soon. Time is running out." Why didn't I go then?

  1. Right. We should never postpone a visit.

    1. No, we shouldn't, but I'm sure everyone does, and it is often too late.

  2. Oh too true! I read "At Seventy" - actually all her work - and liked it. I love reading journals. Perhaps one of my favorite was her "Journal of a Solitude."

  3. Thinking like that today. I read an obituary yesterday. Life is short.

  6. I have read May's journals at least 10 times each! They are comforting to me and I love her mindfulness to her inner and outer life.

  7. I love journals, thanks for highlighting this again. If it's in journal format I like to go through the months, one at a time and not skip around. I am rereading Nigel Slater's Kitchen Diary again and sticking to the appropriate month. Obviously I am reading about March events now.

By the way, this blog header photo is so wonderful, capturing a great scene. I would frame that photo!

    1. Aren't you just so nice to say that about the picture. I'll pass it along to Tom.
I'm kind of reading At Seventy that way. I began it on my 70th, which was on her 70th. Only hers was in the spring. So I decided instead of seasonally, I would read the entries on the same days as those after her birthday. For example, May 4 is the day after her 70th so I read it on the day after my birthday. (My gosh, what a clunky explanation!)

  8. There are too many people I'd love to visit before it's too late, but we are so far away.
