Finally, I'm putting up a Weekend Cooking post! Because my daughter Margaret and I share a love of The Great British Bake Off, I bought her a cookbook by one of the winners. I first heard about it on Jama's page here. Please go right over and read her wonderful blog entry.
The other day I was down at Margaret's house, and I read a few of the stories to Hazel, and decided I had to borrow the book so I could make some of the delicious sounding recipes. The first one comes from a story called

And here is the recipe.
You'll see the amounts are in English measures, so I found a website to translate for me.
Preheat the oven to 350 f.
Almost 1 3/4 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
A little less than 1/4 cup sugar
I used 2 Tablespoons melted butter rather than olive oil
3/4 cup blueberries. Mine were frozen and worked just fine
grated zest of 2 oranges. I used organic Cara Cara
1 egg
3/4 cup buttermilk
Click on the photo that says 'method' above to see how to proceed. I followed her recipe exactly. And we were wowed! It was all we could do to eat 1/4 each and save the rest for breakfast tomorrow. Out of this world delicious!
I'm going to order my own copy from Book Depository because there are many recipes I want to make, and I like to write in my recipe books about when I first made a dish, what I thought, and any changes I made. I hope you give this recipe a try. I've never tasted such a delicious quick bread.
Cute story and it looks yummy. I have never written in a cookbook but my husband makes notes and comments on his recipes.

ReplyDeleteYes, such a nice person. She has written another book I gave to Margaret, and one for maybe middle age readers, which I bought for myself. Yup, only cookbooks!

DeleteNadiya is delightful. Been following her since she appeared on Bake Off (she jokes that her surname ought to be 'Offbakeoff' because when people spot her they always shout, 'Oh, there's Nadiya off bake off'... LOL!) She's become quite the TV presenter and personality, due, I think, to how lovely she is. Very warm and natural. I always watch anything she appears in, there was series where she travelled around Britain looking at local recipes. You'll find it on Youtube I expect. It tickles me how much you love our TV people and programmes, Nan.
ReplyDeleteI love that about her surname! Very funny. She is just a wonderful woman. I also subscribe to Chetna's channel on YouTube. Those early GBBO shows were so good, but I'm not interested in the new ones. I saw a little clip and found the humor unappealing. I would miss Mary and Sue and Mel too much. Have you seen Sue Perkins traveling the Mekong River? It is on Netflix here. We've been watching British tv since it first became available over here on PBS - 1969. Being English majors we lived and breathed England, and still do!
DeleteI didn't know Chetna had a Youtube channel. Reminds me how one of our comedians, Josh Widdecombe, had a huge crush on her the year she did Bake Off and wouldn't stop talking about her. LOL! The new Bake Off is ok but not as good. There's no chemistry between the presenters. I've just watched Mary in her current cooking series, in fact am planning on trying her Honey Chicken when the family visit over Easter. Mel and Sue start a new series of The Generation Game on Saturday so I will be watching. Yes, I watched Sue going up the Mekong... excellent series. Wow, I didn't realise you'd been watching British TV since 1969.

Masterpiece Theatre on PBS began in 1971, but before that The Forsyte Saga was shown in 1969, I think. Once PBS got started we rarely watched American tv. The other early ones were The Pallisers, Upstairs Downstairs, A Family at War. Oh, such good shows.
DeleteWow we loved that show and remember Nadiya so well -- Her family segment was one of the best. I was sad when the series on NetFlix ended and couldn't imagine watching the show without the three women. What is the series called with Sue and the Mekong? I haven't found it.
