I'm watching the whole series of
As Time Goes By again, and this made me laugh.
Mrs Bale brings in tea to Lionel and Jean.
Lionel says, "On the dot, Mrs Bale." (she had said tea would be served in "exactly 17 and a half minutes.")
Mrs Bale responds: "I was born promptly and saw no reason to be anything else for the rest of my life."
Seems fair. I was born 2.5 weeks late, so I tell people they should be pleased I have my tardiness down to 15 minutes most of the time.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! So funny.
DeleteA lot of the 1980s comedies seem better than the modern ones. This was a good series, and I recently saw 'A Fine Romance', which also starred Judy Dench, and found it very funny. Worth watching out for if you have not already seen it.
ReplyDeleteI believe she played opposite her (late now) husband in that one. I'll check into it.
Deletehaha... I have missed Mrs Bale.
ReplyDeleteShe thanks you. ;<))
DeleteYou know how much I love this post. But must confess I'd forgotten about Mrs Bales 'promptness' until this reminder. Her weather watching is what we always quote around here (or paraphrase to be more accurate). Do you own the series or have you found it on one of your services?
ReplyDeleteYes, I own it. I just went through every single episode, including the reunion. It is my favorite series on so many levels. If you love it, as I do, it is so worth owning. I see something new in every watching.
DeleteI loved that series! Of course, I love almost anything Judy Dench does!
ReplyDeleteShe is so wonderful!
DeleteThat series is a favorite at our house too! Love Mrs. Bale!!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's great!!
DeleteOne of my favorites too! Mom and I watched this together. Nan, don't know if you like Rebus but STV is bringing him back in a new series!
ReplyDeleteI did like Rebus, with both the actors. I don't know what STV is, though.
DeleteI love your header photo! It looks like a fairy ring of crocus. Did you plant them?
ReplyDeleteMy husband used to watch this and other Brit sitcoms. I'd hear him laughing and come see what he was watching and shake my head. But then I don't like many sitcoms. Give me Masterpiece or Inspector Lewis or Foyle's War or Endeavor, etc. and I'm there while he is bored. We both watch Big Bang Theory together though. And we soldier on!
Not crocus, but bloodroot. More about it here: https://lettersfromahillfarm.blogspot.com/2014/04/miracles-on-maple-hill-by-virginia.html
DeleteI don't really think of ATGB as a comedy, though it is funny quite often. There is so much depth to the lives of the characters. Lewis and Morse and Endeavour I love! Do you know Christopher Sullivan's blog? https://morseandlewisandendeavour.wordpress.com
I enjoy your blog very much. I've rather neglected my own, I'm afraid, but work has interfered & can't be helped. I watch "As Time Goes By", the whole series, almost every year. It's as pleasant a cozy as there ever was. I feel very close to all the characters, truly. Thanks for sharing it. I guess I'd better start my viewing. I always seem to watch it in the summer. Regards, Kathie in Odessa, WA, USA
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!! I don't write nearly as often as I mean to. I've begun putting a post-it with the date I watched ATGB, so when I pick it up again, I'll know when I watched it last! After a while I find myself wanting to be in their world, and watch every evening until I finish. Lovely. Pure bliss.
