Quote du jour/from Peak Practice

From an old British television show called Peak Practice. A character says,
"I like the cold. It lets you know you're alive."

This is exactly how I am feeling this evening of our first real snow of the season. I stand in the open doorway just breathing in the fresh, fresh air.

  1. That's a great quote, Nan. We had our first frost last night, later than usual this year. It did make feel "alive" - and will do so more once we have our first snowfall.

    1. It has been an amazingly warm autumn here, as well. And now, hooray for snow!

  2. I love the first snow too. It does make a change in the air. It is so exciting. I am happy for you to have this winter gift of nature.

  3. Looks and sounds perfect! We had 74 degrees F yesterday and 40 today! WE typically do not see snow until late Dec or Jan and more often than not it is just a dusting.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a note! We haven't had 74 but it has still been warm for November around here. This snow is more like it!

  4. Ha! And I grumble when it's sunny and 32 degrees outside. I do not like the cold!! :)

  5. Here in Santa Barbara we are finally getting some cooler weather (high around 65 today), and you have snow. I would love to have some snow... but probably not as much as you get.

    1. We didn't get so much this time. NY and VT got more than we did. :<(

  6. As far as I'm concerned, snow can stay away from my area until a day or so before Christmas :-) I'm always out and about with trains, and my sweetheart on the road; getting to and from work as well as travelling to each other's places for the weekends will be a lot harder once the icy and snowy weather sets in.
But I do like how the first snow makes me feel - a flashback to childhood winters, and looking forward to Christmas even more than I already am.
Oh, and I am looking forward to seeing you change your header picture to the one I like most - you know which one I mean :-)

    1. This may be a stupid question but do cars have snow tires or isn't there enough snow to warrant them? And do road crews sand and salt the roads when there is snow and ice? And yes, I know which one you mean!

    2. Yes, cars have snow tires, and major roads are looked after when there is snow and ice. But some of the roads O.K. travels on are rather small and remote (Black Forest) and so there is always a risk of not being able to drive on them.
Also, our trains have become so unreliable, even three little snowflakes can mean I don't catch my connection and travelling will become much harder, longer and colder.

  7. I love snow but it is quite rare here and, always, everything grinds to a halt as the powers that be are totally unprepared. I remember when I was 18 being snowed up in Wales for three weeks, that was great fun. Just damp and dark here today.

    1. Wow! Three weeks! That is just amazing. As I asked Librarian above, do plows put down sand and salt if there is a snowstorm?

    2. They plow and salt the main roads but around here there are some very steep, narrow lanes and they become pretty scary very quickly. Very few of us have chains as we never think we are going to need them!!

    3. Thanks for getting back to me. So very interesting to someone in a winter climate.
