Sweet Peas and Forsythia

Three years ago this month I did a post on what I called a 'friendship' between growing plants. Then I was referring to flowers and vegetables. This year I saw another friendship between a spring-flowering shrub and a flower. We have a perennial sweet pea which doesn't have the smell of the annuals but does come up year after year with beautiful flowers. Last year we put some wire on the light post, and it attached there. This year, it came up and twined itself amongst the forsythia branches. This sort of thing delights my gardener's soul.

  1. I love sweet peas. My Mother had a stand of them when I was a child. They remind me of her when I see them. I have never been able to get them to grow in my garden. They always dry up and never return. Yours look so healthy. I have enjoyed seeing them.

    1. I don't always have good luck with the annual ones, but these perennials seem to like it here.

  2. They always remind me of my mother who loved her garden. I don't think sweet peas would survive in Texas.

    1. I did a search for perennial sweet peas and they say zones 5-9 and I think Texas is in that range! There must be some magic in my plants because we are zone3! Anyhow you can read here: http://www.outsidepride.com/seed/flower-seed/sweet-peas/sweet-peas-perennial-flower-seed.html

  3. Sweet peas are lovely, and so are forsythia! Yellow is my favourite colour anyway, and they brighten up any grey, chilly spring morning. Hope the sweet pea won't choke the forsythia, but I am sure your watchful eyes would notice any sign of that and act immediately.

    1. I didn't get many blossoms, but I'm happy with the plant in general. It won't choke it because it dies back soon.

    1. Annual sweet peas are hit or miss with me. The perennials have worked out great. Good luck, and let me know if you plant some!

  6. I love sweet peas! We've taken our grandchildren to the Flower Show in Boston and they were each able to "Plant Something" ironically in the years they passed away. Amber's was a tomato and it grew that summer and was harvested. Charlie's was a sweet pea, and none of us were able to keep it alive. Bittersweet memories.
