New plants with family name

Today we planted Walker's Low catmint in honor of our new grandson, Campbell Walker. I had looked around for something with his name, and this sounded perfect. It's hardy enough for our zone 3 garden, and it will appeal to our kitties! I bought it from Bluestone Perennials, and they suggested planting Happy Returns daylily with it, so I did. The Walker's Low name comes from an English garden which of course makes it even more appealing to me. I have two hazelnut trees coming in the fall in honor of Hazel Nina! Such fun.

  1. Walkers Low catmint is one of my favorite plants. Our garden is in zone 4 and the plant is so reliable and so undemanding it is a pleasure to grow. Bees, hummingbirds and butterflies love the blooms. Good choice.

  2. It is such a wonderful gesture to plant something in honour of a new family member, and you chose such fitting plants!
Speaking of England - that is where I am headed today; in less than 2 hours, I will be on the train to the airport. It is time for my annual Yorskhire holiday with Steve's family, and I am very much looking forward to 11 days there, this time accompanied by my sister.

  3. What a clever idea to honor your grandchildren. I love this (though thinking of my grands' and great grands' names, I don't think I could come up with a single plant to match Even if I had still been gardening by the time they were around!). Is the catmint a perennial? Otherwise you will have to plant Campbell Walker's plant every year, while Hazel's will grow along with her.

  4. I too love Catmint, Nan. We used to have a "visiting" cat that only came for that, he would bite a bit of the stem off, lay on his back and drool! Lovely that you are planting for the grandchildren. x

  5. This is so appropriate for your renewed gardens.I always love to find plants with the names of family and friends. I have a friend that has the best luck with WLcatmint. I think you will like it. I could smell the lilac pictured on your header. mmm....

  6. Lovely idea Nan, I planted trees for my parents but haven't thought about the grandchildren. Your new header made me smile broadly as soon as I reached your page, it really sings.

  8. Too sweet and too funny....I bought trees and plants with the names of family members, Rosa Paulii, Rose Andrewsii, Emilia flamula, and something for Alice which is not coming to my mind....I planted the trees which are often mentioned in Hungarian poetry so my kids would know them - horse chestnut, linden, oaks, Acacia, etc....(Gingko because my mil remembered the one which grew in her garden in Hungary). I thought I was perhaps the only one who made plant choices for such oddly personal reasons! Did you know there is a Campbell magnolia?
