Today's song/Shine on Harvest Moon

  1. What a fun way to remember the harvest moon! Don't you just love them? Oh, the innocence of entertainment days that it came from. Would they go over in today's jaded taste?

Even last night the moon was glorious here and I'm hoping for clear skies tonight to see it in all its glory.

Did he get the lyrics wrong? January, --April-- June and July? I always sang it January, February, June and July. Which is right, Nan?

  2. You may check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_On,_Harvest_Moon

It seems that April is actually supposed to be first!

We talked about the old 'song and dance men.' I sure can't imagine that now, but how I love them.

  3. My grandfather always sang this to me, along with lots of other popular songs from his pre-WWI youth. He sang, "January, February, June or July." Look up Laurel and Hardy dancing in Way out West - on you tube.

    1. That's how I know it, too, but apparently it was originally 'April.' I've seen that video from WOW. Wonderful, wonderful.

  4. Fun!! I was already singing it as I took pictures of the moon just a couple of hours ago! I guess my mom and dad sang it to me or maybe my grandfather. I've always known the song, in the same way I know nursery rhymes or Peter Rabbit ...or how to count or say the alphabet!

    1. That's why it is so important younger parents sing the old songs to their kids! It's actually quite a wonderful, magic time in music with lots of younger singers doing the old standards.

  5. I just saw this version on YouTube yesterday, Nan, and here you are with it. I just love it! and have been humming Shine on Harvest Moon all day. Unfortunately, we've had rain and cloud cover, but, maybe that old moon will poke through before night ends. Thanks for this great post, Nan.

  6. The moon is definitely shining. Such a beautiful harvest moon, it deserves it's own song.

    1. I've read that it is called 'harvest' moon because it allowed extra light for farmers to get in the crops at the end of summer.

  7. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen this delightful film. We have a whole stack of L&H CDs that we watch often. They are the best comedy pair ever. Such innocence!
