My Dad (a country music fan) and I went to see Tammy Wynette sing at Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady in about 1980. I can still see her in the follow-spot... My Dad was an emergency room doctor in Schdy (when he wasn't doing research for GE at the R&D center) and he told me that she (Tammy) went from the show we saw to the ER. She had a lot of health issues, but she was a real old time country star and she gave the doctor on duty a kiss as she left... Because of riding around with my Dad in the 1970s and early 80s, I have fond memories of the country music of that time (I haven't really listened since). I think I could probably sing you "She Stopped Loving Him Today" but you wouldn't want me to.
NB - This television set pretty much establishes that this pair were not part of the jet set - hay bales and all...
This is the best story. You've got other books in you, my dear! As sexist as it may be, I still love Stand By Your Man. There is no voice like Tammy's.
I was hoping someone would have a mention of George Jones today. I should know that you would, Nan! I also really liked "Stand By Your Man". I don't care if people think it is sexist, it's a great song.

I'm touched that you thought so. I don't have one friend in my non-blogging life who knows who GJ is, let alone knows I would like him. :<) I haven't heard of them, but will be over. I haven't been on the computer much this month and have a lot of postings to catch up on.
I just heard some one say the same thing at the library. There are so many books out there now and so many ways to read them that it's just not worth reading all the way through one you aren't enjoying.

ReplyDeleteI've always felt that reading is a joy not a job. I 'had' to read certain books in college, and am happy to read just what I want now.
DeleteWe used to listen to country music when country music was good and we were young! So I loved this tribute to one of the greats.
