I first heard this song done by Arlo Guthrie. I used to sing it to my kids as they played in the sandbox and I sat on the little triangular seat. The words are so wonderful. I fear that young people now are mostly urban and don't have that same attachment to 'mother earth' as he sings about.
Many, many people have sung his song. As I wrote to Lisa, I first heard Arlo sing it, and I thought he wrote it. I so love what you wrote about the photo. Just wonderful.
I think it was Kat of Coffee fame who introduced me to the Mallett original. Being of the Muppet Show generation, I believed it was a John Denver song. I think it's nice that we all came to it via different paths.
I love what you said about 'different paths.' Really wonderful. That's why it is so great when younger singers/bands do older songs. They introduce a younger generation to music they might not have heard. Example: when we went to Rusted Root, they played Suspicious Minds, and it was news to our kids that Elvis had done it. As I wrote, I knew it as an Arlo song, and never heard of the Muppets/John Denver version. :<)
