Today's song/When I'm Sixty-Four

  1. Oh how I love The Beatles! I was an Elvis fan, but when The Beatles arrived, that was it for Elvis.

My sweet husband turned 75 yesterday. We're both wondering how we got to be so old, since I'm only three years younger.

    1. I never gave up one for the other. :<) Time is amazing when you think that album came out in 1967! A late happy birthday to your Pisces fella! Same day as Tom's mother who turned 84 (and is doing great!).

  2. Hi Nan: Happy Birthday dear Nan. I hope you have a lovely day today, and good wishes for many, many more. As as faithful reader of your blog, I have often marveled at how very similar we are you and I, and now here is one more thing we have in common, we are both February babies.

  5. Dear Nan,
    Happy Birthday!!!
My son and I just returned from my Daddy's and we listened to a Beatles CD in the car and enjoyed this very song. Paul McCartney wrote this when he was very young. Did you know that when it was recorded, it was speeded up slightly so as to make Paul sound younger than he really was? My son told me that he got this info from a book, "Revolution In The Head" and that it is one of his very favorite books. (The only nonfiction he told me on his best list, his favorite fiction books are The Picture of Dorian Gray, Cyrano De Bergerac and....oh dear, I forgot the third one he told me...but I was dodging cars going 85 or 90 down the interstate!)
Anyway, I just meant to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY! and to say we JUST listened to that song! :-) Might have to do a post on this one, you are inspiring me again!

  6. That's a great story, which I hadn't heard. Thanks to your son!
As to the highway speeds, I only ask, 'where are the police???'
    Thanks for the birthday wish!

  7. Happy Birthday! I like the new header pic - your books look in much better condition than mine, which are mostly old and battered.

    1. Thank you! I have some older ones, but this shelf next to the bed is a combination of some favorites, and many I haven't read yet but really look forward to, so they are new-ish books.

  9. Happy Birthday, Nan and snap again!
How impossible sixty four seemed when the record came out.
Paul and Ringo will never see that age again and Paul Simon is finding out whether or not it's terribly strange to be seventy. How did this happen? :-)

    1. It really is inconceivable. Time is such a weird thing.

  10. Remember toodling this in our youthful innocence, never dreaming growing older was quite what it is?

Congratulations on your day. They say 64 is the new 46. (Well, I say anyway.) ;-)

  11. Happy belated Birthday! I hope it was wonderful.

This is one of my favorite Beatles songs from one of my very favorite albums.

  12. Happy belated good wishes on your birthday.

I love your shelf of books and notice you have a couple of my favorites...Out of Africa, which I re-read from time to time, and Friday the Rabbi Slept Late. I have all the Rabbi books and re-read them every few years. No wonder I can't keep up with new books! I spend so much time with my old friends.

    1. Thank you, Jill! I haven't read OfA yet, but look forward to it. And I have read all the Rabbi Small books too. I listened on audio years ago, and just recently bought used copies of the whole series so I can read them again. I love those books. I need to spend more time with 'my old friends.'

  13. Happy Birthday! Our daughter turned 51 on the 22nd -- hard to believe. And also hard to believe is remembering my father telling us proudly that he had bought an 8-track tape of Sgt Pepper because of this song .. he was a little unsure about who the Beatles were, but he'd seen them on Ed Sullivan and he liked the song (He and mom would have been about 60 at the time). (I was a mom of 4 by then and yet couldn't imagine what it would be like to be as old as 64! How times change!)

  15. Happy birthday! I don't have to say "belated", because in my world, everyone gets a full birthday season. If we have a Christmas season and an Easter season and a harvest season and a baseball season, don't you think we all should get our own seasons, too?

I remember when I used to wonder what it would be like, to be 64. Now I know, and it wasn't too bad.

happy happy birthday, and just so you know - it gets better every year

one-finger typing with my left hand - slow and frustrating - broke my shoulder and in sling for six weeks - ouch - reading a lot on my kindle for pc - just discovered katie fforde - from lynn at random jottings

    1. It was accidentally 'charming and witty' I promise!
And that is very good to hear. So many worry about the years to come.
So very sorry about your shoulder. How on earth did that happen? I read one KF I loved the first time, and only liked the second - Wild Designs. I tried a few others but I didn't like that 'romancey' sort of aspect of the bickering between the man and woman and then they get together. I'll have to read what Elaine wrote and see if I should try again!

  17. Happy Birthday, Nan! Great to play that song again. When the Beatles first sang it, I was a young student in London and loved it then -- when "sixty-four" really was for me "many years from now." Hearing it again when "sixty-four" is well behind me, the song still makes me smile, and wipes away the years.

    1. And it makes 64 sound pretty appealing. :<) I wouldn't mind a trip to the Isle of Wight but it is too 'dear' for us. So pleased you read this, Dorothy.
