Quote du jour/G.K. Chesterton

True contentment is a thing as active as agriculture. It is the power of getting out of any situation all that there is in it. It is arduous and it is rare.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton, The Contented Man

  1. Such a fascinating quote. I've been made more aware of G.K. Chesterton through Renovare's list of 25 Books Every Christian Should Read. I hope to work through them, probably starting at Lent, in 2012. Well, not all of them, but to get a start anyway. I'm never disappointed in the books which express the foundation of Christianity.

  2. More true words - I do try to get the best out of situations but don't always succeed I'm afraid.

  3. What a wonderful thought for a Monday and a start to a new week. I think it should be something reflected on each day as so many are no longer content in this world. I am content watching the birds out in the snow eating the bread crumbs I have set out for them. :-)

  4. Ah, Chesterton. What a happy human he was. I have admired him since I read "The Man Who was Thursday" and the "Father Brown Mysteries". I am in the midst of weeding out my too many books, but these two I will never weed out.

  6. Bellezza, there's more here:

Pamela, I think he expressed is so well. We often think of contentment as a passive thing, not an active one.

Rowan, there must be a quote about the worthiness of simply trying!

Heidi, you are a model for this quote.

Betsy, I haven't read any of his work, except for one Father Brown a long time ago. I need to remedy that.

Deniz, yeah, he's like Churchill that way!
