  1. Nan,
What a beautiful day you shared today! Oh, and if only I could reach into my computer and get some of those french fries. They look so good!

  2. Oh, thank you, Kay! The fries were great, as always!

  3. I love going to the Tunbridge Fair. Not sure what will be happening there this year. Could be quite the mud festival. Not sure I am up for it.

  4. I love local fairs (your photos were great Nan)- We waited for more rain all weekend but it never came except at night, but this week might be bad...sighhh

  5. Yes, it looks like a great day out, with lots to see (and taste)! Beautiful picture of you, with that radiant smile :-)

  6. Not so very different from similar events in the UK!
It reminds me of Garnet in Thimble Summer taking her pig to the fair.

  8. Such a wonderful way to spend Labor Day. Thank you for taking us with, Nan. Those fries do look temptingly delicious.

  9. Well, I am a pure sucker for fairs, even when I am viewing them on line.

Thanks and I can't wait for our Common Ground Fair.

    Fair days to you,

    Sharon

  10. Once again we didn't make to our fair or the NY State Fair. Every time it wasn't raining we were too busy trying to make the yard look better. We have a wheelchair for Dave so we could go, but just didn't get there.

  11. Nan,

Thought of you and Tom and the fair this weekend. Good to see you enjoyed the fries and I'm guessing a milkshake, maybe? It was really nice seeing you and the tail end of your great garden. I grabbed a couple wax beans when no one was looking....yum.

  12. Sarah, I have always want to go to Tunbridge but have never made it. Hope the weather dries up for you.

Pamela, probably the same reason I am. :<)

Diane, we had a lovely soft rain all night (I think).

Librarian, I was smiling in anticipation of those fries!

Call me madam, they do seem to be alike the world over. Fried foods, homemade crafts, animals, rides.

Les, ah yes, and they were great!

Penny, I have another whole year to wait for such good fries. All those fair folks peel their own potatoes and fry them in vegetable oil. Yum.

Sharon, as I said to Sarah about Tunbridge, I've always wanted to go to Common Ground. Maybe someday we'll do both!

Barbara, sorry you missed it, but it'll be waiting for you next year!

Billy, we missed you guys! We almost didn't go because it was so hot Saturday and Sunday. When Monday dawned cool and cloudy, off we went. There's a bit of a melancholy about going on the last day. The barns are clearing out. And the RVs weren't open. :<((( The drink was a strawberry smoothie. The milk was all sold out at the dairy stand!
Next year you will have to come over when the beans are smaller. There's nothing like them.

  14. Every time I see the words 'county fair' I think of that beautiful chapter of E. B. White's in Charlotte's Web...I'm so nostalgic for those kinds of fairs, the fairs of my youth, which are better represented in your photographs than in the "Last Fling" which came to our town. Complete with rides, grease, and advertising booths. Ick. I consequently haven't gone in years, and when I hear the current stories I resolve not to go again next year.

  15. Bellezza, oh, there's plenty of grease and rides at my fair too!! But there are also the agricultural barns and 4-H barns. I haven't been able to go on rides for decades so I spend my time wandering the fairgrounds. I actually quoted some of Charlotte's Web in last year's fair posting:

  16. Hi, Nan, what a great photo essay!
Seeing all the photos of quilts and afghans made me wonder if you've read any of Earlene Fowler's cozy mysteries. The titles all come from quilt patterns. There's even one called "State Fair". In the course of the books, we see the development of the relationships of Benni Harper and her husband the police chief and their friends and neighbors. As is the case in many cozy mysteries, the people are as interesting as the whodunit aspect of the story.
Hope you're having a great week! Hugs, Carol

PS - Today's word verification is "trizato" -- sounds like a pasta dish!!

  17. Carol, I have heard of her, but not read her. I will look into her work.
I'm an appreciator, only. I don't do any sewing, knitting, or crocheting. :<)

  18. Looks like a fun day. I like the doodlebug and the close-up on the cow with its pensive, distant expression. And the fries look delicious :)

  19. Love the fair photo's, Nan! Haven't attended one in a while. Perhaps the Sandwich fair this fall.

  20. HKatz, I bet that cow was wondering when it could go home after five days at the fair!

Ron, I've never been to Sandwich Fair. I went to the website and saw it is Columbus Day weekend. It must be packed.

  21. Nothing like a State (county?) Fair! Everything looks like so much fun.

I have to tell you though that that one ripe lucious tomato in your header post is a blue-ribbon winner in my book!

  22. Nan,

Wow - I just stumbled across your blog and noticed the post about the Labor Day Fair. I live in a tiny country town in Australia and we just had a show day too - like you, I shared some pictures on my blog (onehungryhen.blogspot.com) and found it really interesting to see the similarities between our Aussie shows and your fairs, especially the food stand!. I look forward to following your blog. All the best.
    Heidi

  23. Sallie, it was a county fair. This has been a great tomato year!

Welcome, Heidi! And thanks for taking the time to leave a note. I'll be over to see your fair.

  24. There's very little I love more than a good fall fair - the needlework, prize vegetables, baking, farm animals.....OH and the fries!

Great photos - thanks for sharing!
