An Easter to Remember

Charlie

This first Easter in their new house, Matthew and Margaret had both families over for brunch: crepes, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, all kinds of fruit, and chocolate mousse. And lots of dogs! Their two, Matt's sister's Pug, Taz, and Michael's Charlie. You may recall that he was featured in the latest Farm and Garden Report, chasing the farm animals. Another day he had an encounter with a porcupine, and he lost. He had to be anesthetized while the quills were removed. But today's misadventure takes the cake, or should I say, the fudge. I had gotten everybody 1/2 pound of fudge which was filled with those little Cadbury eggs. Before going home, Michael came into our house for a few minutes, and in that time Charlie ate Michael's whole box of fudge. Because of course it is a holiday Sunday, I had to call an emergency vet. I'll tell you his advice in case your dog ever does such a thing. We put 8 teaspoons (based on his weight of 40 pounds) of hydrogen peroxide in some leftover bread pudding. He ate it down. Then a brisk walk and a tummy rub were supposed to induce vomiting. It didn't. The next step was to give him another dose, this time 4 teaspoons. Still no vomiting. Called back, and the vet said bring him down. They had to give him a shot to induce vomiting, and then some activated charcoal for something or other. He can eat only chicken and rice for a few days. Michael just sent us a text photo and the dear little fellow is now sound asleep.

  1. Only the best for Charlie. He must be a real chow hound. I hope he survives. My niece's little dog ate a pound of hershey's kisses, foil and all. She nearly died. She would always like a bit of chocolate. They never learn either. Poor things.

  3. Oh No!! Hope he'll be okay. I can still remember when my SIL's Sheltie Collie ate a chocolate cream pie and a butterscotch cream pie on Thanksgiving at my Godmother;s house. That was over 30 years ago...LOL

  5. I know they are expensive, but I sure am grateful that we have those emergency vets available for after hours. I have had to use ours twice and have been so glad they were there.

I'm sure that Charlie will continue to improve. Aren't those dogs just rascally?

  8. Glad he's ok! Our Annie-dog got herself a bunny for Easter. A real bunny. We were too late to stop her.

  11. Thanks everyone for writing! Just heard from Michael that you wouldn't know anything had happened to Charlie. He's as energetic as ever!

If it ever happens to your dogs, just be sure and call a vet. Time is of the essence.

  12. So glad the dog is okay. We had a Brittany spaniel that found a box of chocolates under the Christmas tree one year. Disaster! He was running from both ends. He survived in fine form, but the living room carpet didn't. Fortunately, the carpet was old and scheduled to be replaced -- we just had to do it sooner rather than later!
    Take care and God bless,

  14. Oh, the poor thing. But it sounds as if he's going to be okay. My chihuahua would have done the same thing! Rocky will eat anything that isn't nailed down. He's like a little barrel with legs. Ha!

  15. Yvette, dogs are really eating machines! We had one that ate rocks once. Another ate a whole bowl of candy.

  17. Apart from Charlie's fudgy adventure, I hope the first Easter at the new house was a wonderful time for everyone.
Would it really have been dangerous for Charlie if you had just let things run their natural course?

  18. You WILL remember this Easter! Oh, my. I hope Charlie will be well soon and I hope he will forsake his chocolate guzzling ways, poor guy!

  19. Ann, he's still not a year old, and most exuberant about life!

Librarian, thank you. We did have a wonderful time.

You can type in dogs eating chocolate and find lots of information, but here is one site:

Kristi, he will 'forsake' it if there isn't any around to eat!

  20. First of all -- how delightful (at least up to that certain point) for your "kids" to be able to host their first Easter in the new house. And the menu sounds scrumptious.

Secondly -- Charlie definitely is adding some excitement to your lives! Yesterday's with the electric fence was amusing, but this one was really scary. It sounds like he will be OK thank goodness. And of course when would that kind of thing happen besides on a weekend!~Never fails.

  21. It was a lovely gathering, Sallie, with Matt's mother and sister, too. The food was amazing. And yes, it is always, always on a weekend.

  22. I've heard about chocolate being like poison to dogs. I wonder why. I'm glad Charlie is OK now. Thank goodness. That was quite a scare.

  23. Kay, if you go to the link I posted in a reply to Librarian's comment, it tells the reason.

  24. I certainly hope Charlie's luck is changing and he's safely on the mend now.

Whereupon you can spend the next umpteen Easters saying things like "Remember the year Charlie ate all that fudge?" and "Hydrogen peroxide, anyone?"

  25. J.G., that is so hilarious! And true!

  26. How frightening! I'm so glad the dog is okay. WHAT a day!

  27. Dorothy, and what I didn't mention is that the emergency vet was over an hour's drive - luckily closer to Michael's home, but still he had to drive from here.
